Has anyone had any experience / problems configuring the Rift with dual monitors? Does DisplayFusion help with managing the Rift in a dual monitor setup, so that you can easily run VR programmes in Extended mode?

I've only just bought Display Fusion, after a week of frustration with the Rift, Win7 and two Dell monitors, and hope it will provide some easy functionality. Any advice / experiences / troubleshooting suggestions will be very welcome.

Cheers

If you have the Rift DK1, you can run the monitors in mirrored mode easily, and you can even create a DisplayFusion profile to do this.

If you have a Rift DK2, Oculus made it much more difficult to set this up. You can no longer run in mirrored mode, you have to run in extended mode. Are you using the DK2 in "Direct HMD" mode or "Extended Mode"?

Thanks!

DK2 here. If I run a demo using the 'direct to rift' mode (where it's offered as an option) I can get it to work as I imagine it should, with full 3d presence on the rift. With two monitors, I see a window overlapping the monitors, so half the window is on one, and half on the other. About 50% of the time you can see the rift display mirrored on this window; for other demos it's just a black window.

I've not yet managed to get Extended mode working on anything. I don't know if it's because my monitors' maximum resolution is 1650 wide, but Nvidia control panel only let's me have 2 monitors active, and although it shows the Rift as a third monitor, I can't put a tick in the checkbox.

I'm hoping that DisplayFusion will help, although I'm not sure how. I can't be the first person with a dual monitor setup that wants to use a DK2 without trashing the normal day-to-day setup of the PC. It would be ideal if I could keep a dual display (preferably with different desktop images - or one widescreen image stretched over both monitors), but then be able to see the Rift display 'echoed' on on of the monitors when it's being used, so that people can see what the rift user is experiencing.

Cheers

The easy answer here is that Oculus needs to make the Direct HMD mode work correctly for all games and hardware setups. Without this, the extended mode is really tricky to use. Because of the odd screen they choose to use in the DK2, it isn't possible to mirror it at 1080p with an existing monitor. DisplayFusion can help a bit by creating Monitor Profiles, but it's still tricky to get some demos/games to start on the correct DK2 "monitor". I expect that Oculus will improve this over time with new runtimes and firmware, so I would say stay tuned to see what they have planned next. :)

NOTE: To get this to work the rift MUST be in extended mode & the LED on the front of the unit must be blue. If it is yellow this will not work. If yellow play with switching direct/extended mode in the Rift software & toggling power button on the Rift

To get DF & DK2 working using extended mode on my dual screen setup I did the following:

Exit DisplayFusion

Power up Rift to blue LED - open display driver software, in my case AMD catalyst, driver config window will appear on the Rift.

Look into Rift, locate the Catalyst/Nvidia window & drag it out to a standard monitor using mouse. (Get used to this process when running in extended mode).

Setup monitors like first 2 screens here: http://imgur.com/a/ifK0V#0
Your standard monitors should display native resolutions. I have my second monitor on the left, but I guess the reverse applies if yours is on the right. NOTE Rift orientation HAS to be set to portrait to render correctly (side effect of using a mobile screen). The Rift should be the primary monitor.

Apply settings & close window

Launch DF & set its monitor profile as in screenshot 3 ie replicating the settings you just setup in display drivers.

In my experience if you try to use DF to change catalyst settings it will ALWAYS error when the Rift is plugged in.

Now, when you power up/down the Rift with the software in extended mode, the resolutions/number of screens should switch correctly.

ProTip: You can also setup a wallpaper profile to show a black wallpaper on the Rift to lessen the chance of screen burn, & a white one for cleaning the screen of debris.

Also when starting Unity based games, highlight the extended mode .exe, hold shift & double click the exe, this will open a basic config, make sure res is set to 1080, the monitor is the rift, & windowed mode is not selected. The new settings for that app should persist.

It's a pain but personally I think it's worth getting running as direct-to-rift has some issues with FPS & judder right now.

Mike, thanks for the detailed response. I'll spend some time seeing how that all pans out, and report back. Thanks a lot for your time!
