Hi

Displayfusion has crashed a couple of times in the last week on a machine running Windows 7. The crash reports are attached (the same each time). On one occasion nothing was running aside from Outlook, otherwise the machine was idle (i.e. no windows being moved between monitors etc)

Is there something that can be done to update/repair the installation?

Unfortunately those crash reports are a bit generic. Could you enable debug logging and attach the log (instructions below) the next time it occurs?
  • Enable debug logging on the Troubleshooting tab (set it to Logging: Important Only) and click Apply
  • Restart DisplayFusion
  • The next time it crashes, note the time so we'll know where to look in the log
  • Attach the %appdata%\DisplayFusion\DisplayFusion.log file to this topic (can be found by clicking the 'Open Log' button on the Troubleshooting tab)
  • Disable debug logging after sending me the log

Thanks!

Awesome, thank you. I have enabled the logging now so will send through the log as soon as it crashes again

Hi

Please find attached the log file after a crash has occurred on Display Fusion. Unfortunately the machine was being accessed remotely and the crash was only noticed after the remote session ended, so we can't say for sure the exact time of the crash, however we think it was between 15:20-15:30 on 05/04/2014

Thanks! Unfortunately the log doesn't include any helpful info, so it's possible that DisplayFusion crashed before the log lines could be written. We're looking into a way to add some better logging so that we can determine which function may be causing the crash. I'll let you know as soon as we have a new build with the new logging stuff.

Ok, we've just released 6.0 Beta 10, and it includes some new logging that will at least let us know if the crash is being caused by a specific thread. Could you try updating, and then send over a new debug log?

Thanks!

Hi

Thanks for the update, oddly enough since sending you the crash report originally, we haven't had any more crashes from Display Fusion! If we do get any from now on, I will follow the troubleshooting steps and send through the log!

Thanks! I noticed in your troubleshooting info that you're running Avast. I had another customer complain of DisplayFusion crashing, and he is also running Avast, just wondering if there may be a conflict there. Which version of Avast are you running? I'll install it here to test it out.

Thanks Steve! I'll run that here for a while to see if I can reproduce the same results.

While I haven't seen crashing multiple times a day, I have noticed some weirdness with DisplayFusion when it launches and gets scanned by the DeepScreen stuff in Avast. Would you be able to try adding DisplayFusion as an Exclusion in Avast to see if that makes an difference on your system?

Just an update, seems to be getting worse, getting to the point of 3-5 times, seems to not like changing focus from screen 1 to screen 2.

most notable times are opening adobe pdf files, watching online shows, or just going back and forth from screen to screen, but then there are times where i am not doing anything actively and it stops working.

*EDIT - just noticed the last post, I did run with avast off for a couple of days as well, crashing still happened, but i will add the exception as well

**EDIT2 - just crashed withing 30 mins of putting in the exception in avast

***EDIT3 - also this might help, when it does crash and i just reload it, the window animations and the windows snapping doesnt work till i close it manually and re launch it

Ok, it doesn't sound like Avast is causing the crash then. If you try disabling some of the DisplayFusion features (TitleBar Buttons, Multi-Monitor Taskbar), does the crashing stop?

ok, so its been a few days, and when i leave the computer on (which i normally leave it on 24/7) it will become "stable"

example:
powered up the machine
3-4 "stopped working" after restarting it, then manually closing it, then reloading it to make it correct (as in the windows minimizing to the right bar"
let it run for the evening, no more crashes

reboot the next day to test more and it repeats then ends up stable after a few crashes

mainly have all the settings off besides the second taskbar, really the only reason i have the app, and even then most of the "extras" are disabled.

been using the software for quite sometime now, and this only showed up in the last few months, so i was guessing it was an update.

Ok, could you update to 6.0.1 Beta 1 (http://www.displayfusion.com/Download/Beta/) and if it still crashes, send over a new debug log?

Thanks!

EDIT:
after a few rebooted, it managed to run, so far no new errors

Ok, strange! There's nothing weird in the debug logs you attached, but if it does crash again, please attach a new copy and I'll check them out.

Thanks!

Unfortunately DisplayFusion has crashed about 4 times in the last few days. We are running version 5.1.1 still as the user is very specific about how things work on his computer and we haven't had a chance to test the 6.0 version to ensure he is happy with it. However if you suggest an upgrade to resolve this issue, we should be OK to implement that

The logs are attached. The crashes occurred at the following times:

18/08: 6:52am, 7:51am, 10:53am
19/08: 5:00am

I'm seeing some lines in the log similar to another customer who reported crashing as well. We've made some changes for 6.0.1 Beta 4 that should hopefully fix this up. Could you update and let me know how it works out?

Thanks!

I know it has been a while, but that is a good thing.... after updating to beta, it seems much more stable, i have only had one crash since, and i think that was from something else.
