I am trying to use Displayfusion (trial version) with Dexpot. I found this thread, but I actually want the taskbar entries to remain in place even after switching virtual desktops.

I am running a two monitor setup with two virtual desktops. I have Firefox open on the 2nd monitor on desktop 1. If I switch to desktop 2 where Firefox isn't visible, the taskbar entry for Firefox moves from monitor 2 to monitor 1. Is there any way to prevent this from occurring?

Thanks, Dan

Does this only happen with Firefox? Or with other applications as well?

It seems to be consistent for all applications that I have tested.

We had followed up with the Dexpot dev to see what he could do, as we didn't change anything on our end since the last time we fixed this, but haven't heard back from him. We'll try contacting him again, and I'll be sure to post an update when we're able to get this issue sorted out.

Thanks!

I may have misunderstood the discussion in the other thread, but I think my request is the opposite of theirs. To be clear, my preference is that the taskbar entries remain on the DF taskbar when switching to a different virtual desktop. As is, the entries jump back and forth between the standard taskbar and the DF one.

Thanks for the reply.

Ah ok, I wasn't able to reproduce that behaviour. And actually, I wasn't able to reproduce the bug from that other thread any more either for some reason. When I open Firefox on monitor 2, then switch to another desktop, its taskbar button gets removed correctly.

Which version of Dexpot are you running?

I'm running the latest version of Dexpot (1.6.14). Make sure that you have the "Keep all taskbar buttons visible" option enabled (Settings > Switching Desktops > Desktop Elements).

Ah ok, I can reproduce the issue now. We'll have a look to see what we can do :)

We've just released a new DisplayFusion beta version (http://www.displayfusion.com/Download/Beta/) and this issue should be all fixed up. Please let us know if you run into any trouble after updating.

Thanks!

That's definitely an improvement. However, I'm observing a minor "shimmy" on the Windows taskbar when switching back and forth between the Dexpot virtual desktops. Occasionally, the taskbar button will briefly appear on the Windows taskbar and then disappear.

Is that happening with applications that are on the primary monitor? Or ones on the second monitor?

The application is on the secondary monitor. The taskbar "shimmy" is on the primary monitor and appears to be due to the application appearing briefly (milliseconds) on the primary monitor's taskbar. Occasionally, the application will appear on the primary taskbar before disappearing. Rapidly switching between Dexpot desktops is the best way I was able to reproduce.

Ok, interesting. I can't reproduce that here no matter how quickly I switch between desktops. Would you be able to send over a debug log after reproducing it? Here are the steps:
  • On the Troubleshooting tab, change the Logging drop-down to "Logging: Important Only"
  • Restart DisplayFusion
  • The next time it occurs, note the time so we'll know where to check in the log file
  • Send us the DisplayFusion.log and DebugInfo.html files (can be found by clicking the Open Log button on the Troubleshooting tab)
  • Disable debug logging after sending the log

Thanks!

See attached logs. FWIW, I also found another app (Microsoft Visual FoxPro) where the taskbar button always moves from the secondary monitor to the primary one when switching to a Dexpot desktop where this app isn't shown.

The applications that briefly appear on the Windows taskbar, are they maximized on the second monitor? If you restore them so that they're not maximized, does the taskbar "shimmy" still occur?

Which version of Visual FoxPro has that issue? I'll try to test it out here.

Ok, would it be possible for you to attach a video of both issues? I can't get either one to occur here :(

FWIW, I have replicated the issue without dexpot being involved. Here is a screen capture of the primary taskbar. The Vipre application is running on the secondary monitor, but you can see the entry appear briefly on the taskbar whenever I minimize or restore a window.

Ahhh, I didn't realize you were running Windows XP. My bad. That's actually always been that way in XP, for some reason Windows wants to create the button on its taskbar every time a window gets focus, so we have to remove it really quickly every time. Unfortunately it's not possible for us to just straight up keep windows from adding it before it gets shown :(

Sorry!
