Has anyone noticed that the wallpapers you set through DisplayFusion are at significantly lower quality than the default Windows wallpaper picker? If I have a PNG picture that I want to keep every curves of sharp, and set it as a wallpaper through the default Windows option, it stays sharp. But if I do a multi-screen wallpaper through this program, it degrades in quality, and the edges become annoyingly blurry- you know what a JPEG looks like after all.

So is there any way of setting the wallpapers to maintain the original quality? I am currently on an unregistered version of the program and considering it's purchase through Steam, however this is a deal breaker if there's no fix for it

DisplayFusion does support lossless wallpaper images, but it depends which version of Windows you are using. Are you using Windows 8 or higher? Thanks!

Hello and thanks for your reply, yes I'm on Windows 8 Pro 64bit (not 8.1)

Ok, it should be using .PNG files on Win 8.1. Could you send over a debug log? Here are the steps:
  • On the Troubleshooting tab, change the Logging drop-down to "L1: Log Minimal"
  • Restart DisplayFusion
  • Apply the wallpaper
  • Send us the DisplayFusion.log and DebugInfo.html files (can be found by clicking the Open Log button on the Troubleshooting tab)
  • Disable debug logging after sending the log

Thanks!

I apologize for the inactivity, here is my log.
I'm still on Windows 8, and I still see both JPEG and PNG images being converted to a very lossy quality of a JPEG image, which is then set as a wallpaper.

Sending attachments of logs generated after finishing the given instructions

Thanks! Could you send me one of the images that you're trying as well, so I can test it out here?

I am sending you the image for my main 1920x1080 screen (middle, clip edges), in a PNG format. I'm also sending the wallpaper generated from DisplayFusion
• Attachment [protected]: Wallpaper 1 (Pencil Nebula).png [6,201,228 bytes]
• Attachment [protected]: Wallpaper_2.jpg [3,233,286 bytes]

Thanks! On your system, does the actual wallpaper look worse than the generated image?

Nope, I see the exact picture of what I sent you, not worse or better quality when set as a wallpaper. My Windows 8 can handle PNG pictures without making them lossy.

If the program could optionally generate PNG pictures without adding additional compression as it does now with it's JPEG format, that would be awesome

Ok, thanks! That's actually what it is doing right now. The .jpg is generated just as a fall back, but you'll notice in the folder that there should be a "Wallpaper_1.png" or "Wallpaper_2.png" as well. Is that file there?

Sorry, just remembered you're on 8.0, so the "Wallpaper_1" or "Wallpaper_2" will have no file extension, but if you rename it to .png, you should be able to open it up. Does that file look better than the .jpg?

There is indeed a second wallpaper file without any extension, over 10MB big. However, it's the exact same quality of the JPEG, just converted into PNG.

Ok, that's definitely weird. Could you attach the generated PNG as well so I can compare them?

I just found out that I have sent you pictures from appdata on my second disc, where an older installation of DisplayFusion went to, before I reinstalled it with the newest update. But the pictures are the same, just the PNG one is 13MB instead, so I'm sending it in a package. It went from roaming to local probably because I've checked the "Install for all users" option this time.

I hope this isn't because I don't have Windows 8.1, I would love to update to it but I can't since I have a double-disc system with all Windows stuff on SSD and documents symlinked to a HDD. Following one guide to install it on such a system made me brick my only Windows account and I had to fiddle around the CMD mode for the whole afternoon, manually rewriting registry entries...

Ok, yeah, this PNG looks about the same as the JPG. We set the JPG quality to 100%, and don't have compression enabled for the PNG, which means that it's the .NET image library that's mangling it when it scales/crops it :(

Unfortunately the only way for us to resolve this would be to change to a different image library, which is no easy task. However, I will put this on our list, and if we're able to switch image libraries in a future version, I'll let you know so that you can try it out :)

Thanks!
