I have 3 displays connected to a single PC in my office.

70" 1080p TV in the basement media room
2x 40" 60hz 4k displays in my office (one landscape, one portrait)

Among other things, I use displayfusion to switch from my office displays to my media room. The problem is that monitor configuration profiles don't seem to save monitor orientation. So, I save an office profile with one 4k in landscape and the other in portrait. When I switch back to the office from the basement by selecting the office profile (landscape + portrait), both 4k displays are in landscape. Again, profiles seem to ignore orientation. Is this a known issue?

Computer:

i7 3770
Titan X

This problem has persisted through multiple drivers and video cards. I'm currently using the latest from nVidia. Thoughts?

Would you be able to try the latest DisplayFusion Beta if you haven't already? (http://www.displayfusion.com/Download/Beta/)

If it's still busted, could you send me a backup of your DisplayFusion Settings (Settings > Options > Export)?

Thanks!

Unfortunatly, the beta doesn't solve the issue. Settings attached. Thanks again.

Thanks! It looks like it's saved correctly in the settings for the "Office Seiki & Samsung" profile, so for some reason it's just failing to apply it. Could you send me a debug log that's captured while switching from the "Basement" profile to the "Office Seiki & Samsung" profile?
  • On the Troubleshooting tab, change the Logging drop-down to "L1: Log Minimal"
  • Restart DisplayFusion
  • Reproduce the issue and note the time so we'll know where to check in the log file
  • Send us the DisplayFusion.log and DebugInfo.html files (can be found by clicking the Open Log button on the Troubleshooting tab)
  • Disable debug logging after sending the log

Hi Keith I have replied on this thread as I believe I am experiencing something similar.

I have 5 monitors (all identical and with same resolution) with 1 set up as portrait (flipped) and the other 4 landscape. The portrait (flipped) is the primary monitor and sits to the side of the others which are set up in a square formation. I have several screen splits applied to these monitors. The issues I am experiencing are:

1. When I log out and the screens go to standby Display Fusion is not retaining all the saved monitor settings - just the primary portrait monitor (i.e. not the 4 landscape monitors). This results in all the splits being lost from these monitors.

2. When I then attempt to load the saved profile it restores the monitors with the splits but in the wrong sequence. i.e. monitors 1-5 are not in the right order so the one that was the primary portrait monitor is now sitting sideways on one of the landsacpe monitors and vice versa etc. This situation can not be resolved as there is no way to reassign the monitor numbers.

3. (less important) the applications move in standby mode often with 2 of the monitors being left blank and the applications seemingly randomly moving to other monitors. With around 20 windows open this results in a lot of manual work moving them back. I know this could be an issue with the windows process but would be interested in understanding anything I can do to prevent this happening.

I am hoping you can offer a solution as all of this is resulting in a lot of work effectively buidling a new profile every time! I will send the log shortly if this helps.

Thanks in advance
Mike

Attached is the screen setup and log. The log doesn't yet show the issue which happens when I restart the computer however it should support the position I am starting from i.e. loading new profile which then sets up screens in wrong config. If you need me to recreate the startup issue let me know.

And finally to complete the set, here is the log update for problem #1, i.e. the PC goes to sleep and forgets the splits on all the landscape monitors. Also almost all of the applications get sucked across to the portrait monitor.

It seems to point to an issue with the mixed monitor setup as I have experienced the opposite issue when one of the landscape monitors was set as the main monitor - i.e. the single portrait monitor would lose it's splits while the 4 landscape monitors would remain intact.

@Gechsy: If you disable monitor sleep, does everything stay working correctly after logout/login, or a reboot?

I will need to check that. It has certainly happened the PC goes to sleep (i.e. after 1 hour of inactivity) and when I have put it to sleep. I am pretty sure sometimes it happens when I have been in lock mode.

Can you remind me what the alternative is to windows monitor sleep, as I like to turn them to sleep mode at night. i.e. is there a DispFus override?

When the PC is shut down it always happens on restart. And the main problem is I have no way of restoring the settings when it happens due to issues outlined above so have to start again.

Sorry, for some reason I lost track of this thread. When you restart, are some of the monitors (particularly the TV) disabled?

Also, were you able to try it without sleep mode to see if that helped at all?

I suspect everything is being lost when they go to sleep. How do I remove sleep mode, and is this feasible i.e. would this mean having to leave all 5 monitors on all day? Also note I don't use a TV they are 5 x acer 23" monitors, 1 or which is set to flipped portrait (main) the other 4 are landscape.

I think the main issue here is I am unable to load the profile as when it is being saved it is getting the monitors in the wrong sequence. Therefore the portrait monitor appears sideways on one of the landscape monitors etc etc

And to answer your qu: no none of the monitors are disabled. When coming out of sleep mode they all switch on and are in the same forrmation; however they have usually dropped the splits and lost track of their applications, i.e. these have moved to another monitor probably dictated by order in which they entered sleep mode. Note the only monitor that doesn't lose it's splits is the portrait (flipped) monitor which is designated as main.

Interestingly the last couple of times when I restart PC display fusion starts up it has remembered all the splits, but this does not occur by closing down DispFusion and restarting, i.e. without restarting the PC.

You can disable sleep mode for the computer and monitors in the Windows Control Panel > Power Options section. It would then leave your monitors powered on all day, but I'm wondering if you could try it just as a test.

Thanks!

OK noted thanks. However the key issue is:

I am unable to load the saved profile as it is getting the monitors in the wrong sequence. Therefore the portrait monitor appears sideways on one of the landscape monitors. i.e. monitors 1-5 are not in the same order as when they were saved.

This means I have to manually setup the monitors and splits every time the computer restarts.

FWIW I am pretty sure this is an issue with having a split portrait/landscape setup as I don't recall this happening before before when all my monitors were landscape.

Sorry for the delayed response on this! We've run into the monitor IDs changing when drivers are updated, or monitors are cloned and then extended again. On your system, what seems to trigger the monitor ID change?

Hi Keith,

Any update on this? I have two monitor profiles: one with both monitors in landscape and the other with one in landscape and one in portrait. I have those profiles set to hotkeys but every time I switch back the one in portrait defaults back to landscape. I never have any issues switching back from the portrait setup to landscape but from landscape to portrait never works. Any help with this?

Thanks!

@Rhinosopher: Could you attach a copy of your troubleshooting info?
  • Open the Settings > Troubleshooting tab
  • Click the "Copy to Clipboard" button
  • Paste the text into a text file (please don't paste the text directly into your reply, the formatting gets garbled and makes it difficult to parse)
  • Reply with the file attached

Hi Keith, I still have no resolution on this issue which is frustrating as most times I start work I am having to manually reconfigure windows and taskbars which seemingly behave randomly. I can now confirm it is not just the mixed orientation causing this as I gave up on having one monitor in portrait so I now have all 5 monitors in landscape. I have tried:

1. saving my configuration - this only results in the config being restored to the wrong monitors; bizarrely DispFusion sometimes still thinks I have a portrait monitor despite having changed this to landscape; the issue remains that the monitors are getting mixed up i.e. the formation I have is not the one that gets loaded up

2. setting up the autosave/restore functionality but most times this restores applications to wrong screens, once again seemingly at random; with taskbars scrambled

This is causing a lot of time wastage and as a paying customer I must admit I have been looking around at other software (to no avail) - am really hoping something can be done to resolve this. Should I try uninstalling/reinstalling? Is it an issue with having 5 monitors?

Thanks in advance

@Gechsy: Do the monitor ID numbers still change on sleep/restore or on a shutdown/restart? And when they change in DisplayFusion, are they also changed in the Windows display settings?

Wow, that's weird! So they look correct in the DisplayFusion Monitor Configuration window, but are all messed up in the actual Windows display settings? If you close and re-open the DisplayFusion Monitor Configuration window, does it then look messed up like the Windows one?

The DispFusion config changes as soon as you elect to keep changes, so actually before you close/open. Strangely a new monitor profile work straight away, I set one up now and it works fine when loaded, but as with the previous ones at some point when loaded the monitors are scrambled - making the save process ineffective and causing a lot of time having to set up the monitors/windows/taskbars/splits when they get dropped.

Ok, I have a new test, to see if the profile is getting messed up before or after trying to load it. Could you give this a go?
  • When the Monitor Profile is working, export your DisplayFusion Settings (Settings > Options >
    Export Settings).
  • The next time you load the profile and the monitor IDs get messed up, try restoring the Settings, then try loading the profile again. Does it work, or is it messed up again?

Hi Keith - I followed your instructions and the restore was not successful. I found the version I exported and although something was happening (the wallpaper was reset momentarily) and I received a "successful" message, no changes were pulled through.

Now all of a sudden windows is dropping the monitor config (i.e. under display settings) as well - this never happened before. So I am having to spend 20 minutes every day setting up the windows config then reapplying all the splits in DispFusion. Then dragging all the windows back into place. On top of this usually the taskbars have changed setting. Like I said before the save profiles don't work (see previous) which would save all the bother, and the trigger set up to restore window locations before the monitors go to sleep only works some of the time, and never when another user has logged on - resulting in a LOT of manual dragging (I have around 20 windows open across 5 monitors with several splits applied).

Hopefully you can offer some help as this is getting very time consuming!
