I'm currently having problem with a computer with a four-monitor setup. Sometimes (few times a day), after the display turns back on (after being turned off - set to automatically happen after 10 minutes), the apps will have moved to the bottom two monitors (a square layout). Does this have to do with those two monitors being "turned on" first? Some of the apps even seem to move off all four monitors, showing they are somewhere off monitor to the right (you can tell by how it flies off that way when the application is opened via task bar).

Also having a bit of trouble with icons, but I've tried turning off the grid option. If this doesn't work I'll just have it load a profile on wake, no biggie. The problem is that all of the applications are precisely placed, and moving them a few times a day is a chore.

Thank you for any help.

Update: Set Windows so that it wouldn't turn off the display, but applications are still moving.

After seeing all the posts mentioning problems with Nvidia, I should probably note that both cards I'm using are Nvidia GeForce. Still, it doesn't seem to be the same problem that others mentioned before.

Sometimes the apps will move to different taskbars, and other times icons will move to random positions as well.

Strange that the applications are still moving even though the displays aren't entering sleep mode. Are you locking the workstation and switching users at all? Or is the machine itself entering standby?

Regarding the desktop icons, you can save their layout as a Desktop Icon Profile and have it auto load based on the detected Monitor Profile. If you'd like instructions for that, please let me know :)

Thanks!

Yeah, that's how I'm handling the icons, no problems there.

That was my first assumption when I heard of the problem; but the user is never switched out, the monitor display doesn't turn off (anymore), it doesn't go to screensaver. It does seem that it happens when it hasn't been used in a while, but I can't think of any mode that it would be entering that I haven't turned off yet that would be making the difference. Is there any kind of automatic refresh that would be happening?

Thank you for the help : )

That's strange indeed! If you can capture a debug log and send it over the next time you notice the desktop icons out of position, hopefully there will be some clues there that will help us track it down. Here are the steps:
  • On the Troubleshooting tab, change the Logging drop-down to "Logging: Important Only"
  • Restart DisplayFusion
  • The next time it occurs, note the time so we'll know where to check in the log file
  • Send us the DisplayFusion.log and DebugInfo.html files (can be found by clicking the Open Log button on the Troubleshooting tab)
  • Disable debug logging after sending the log

Thanks!

I wish I could give you a more precise time of exactly when it happened, but all I can say for sure is that it was sometime between when logging was started (4:15 PM) and 4:43 PM. The icons and applications were both moved.

When we first got DisplayFusion, only the icons would move (which was when we found out about the profiles). It's only been the last two weeks (roughly) that it started moving applications. It doesn't do both all the time, either; sometimes it only moves the applications, sometimes the applications and the icons. Very odd.

Thanks! Looks like there's some ThinkPad power management utility that's done something (maybe switched the laptop to the integrated graphics?) at 4:31pm.

In the log, I can see a process called PwmIdTsv.exe (http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkVantage-Technologies/PMTask-and-PwmIdTsv-exe/td-p/212348) starting up, and then right after that, a couple of Intel graphics processes start, and then there's a WM_DISPLAYCHANGE message, which indicates that something has changed with the display configuration. It's the WM_DISPLAYCHANGE that can trigger Windows to re-position applications and icons, depending on what's changed during the detection.

So, it sounds like maybe the ThinkPad power management stuff is doing something at idle. Hopefully that points you in the right direction!

There haven't been any problems with moving applications or icons since I uninstalled the Lenovo Power Manager. Since this was occurring daily, and we've gone around two days without any problems at all, I'm going to optimistically state that this fixed the issue.

Thank you very much! You prevented multiple headaches, and it feels good to finally know what was going on.

Hi sorry to use an old link but I have an almost identical problem i.e. 4 monitor setup with applications moving around (usually when the monitors go into sleep mode)

Are you able to point me in the right direction with the attached log?

Thanks
Mike

@Gechsy: The problem is that some monitors get fully disconnected from the computer when entering sleep. When this happens, Windows does a full re-detection of the displays, and then the windows get all shuffled around. DisplayFusion has a couple of functions on the Settings > Functions tab that can help with this: "Save Window Positions," and "Restore Window Positions." I assign key combinations to those, save the positions before I leave the computer, then restore them when I return :)

Hope that helps!

OK great thanks Keith that worked a treat.

One other issue which I'm sure you get asked a lot (but despite searching I haven't found the solution to yet)....... I understand how to open Outlook itself but not the "sub windows"i.e. a new task or calendar entry. How can I ensure these open in a designated monitor? I would like to open in one of my "split" monitors i.e. monitor #4.2.

Cheers

You can do that with the new Triggers feature in the latest beta. In Trigger rule, you'd specify the path to Outlook, and also put part of the Window Title into the rule (i.e. "Calendar"). More details on setting up Triggers can be found here: http://www.displayfusion.com/KB/WorkingWithTriggers/

Please let me know if you run into any trouble at all :)

Thanks!
