I've recently uninstalled DisplayFusion Free, as they only reason I installed it was to have different desktop wallpapers on each monitor, but I have since found an alternative. However, I find that the logon background is somehow still being managed by DisplayFusion, as it's stock images are still being cycled through with each unlock/log-in. I do not want these images cycled through, and I want to change it using another method I've used for a few years.

(Personally, I believe a free version of an application should not change base functionality of a system and then force those changes onto the user, but rather should just keep the original base functionality.)

The Windows Logon Background feature isn't even available in the Free version: http://www.displayfusion.com/Compare/. And if DisplayFusion is uninstalled, there shouldn't be any way that it could be changing the Windows Logon Background. Are you positive that it's DisplayFusion that's changing it?

Hmm - my understanding of the free version was that it changed it, but locked it down to that change. My mistake then.

However, I don't have anything else that would change it away from what TweaksLogon changes it to. The only three other applications I installed (the first two of which I uninstalled nearly straight away) were Synergy, ShareMouse, and Mouse Without Borders - none of these have logon background changing utilities in them.

Hmm, I just realised that the images are built-in Win7 theme images...

My apologies for the trouble - I'd heard that the DisplayFusion service had persisted post-uninstall in a past version (albeit some time ago), so I wasn't ready to say "the program's uninstalled, so it's not the culprit".

Ok, strange! If you check the Windows Task Manager > Processes tab, are any DisplayFusion.exe processes running? If the service is indeed still running, you should see DisplayFusionService.exe on the Processes tab.

Other things you can check are whether any files still exist in C:\Program Files (x86)\DisplayFusion, or check the Services console to see if DisplayFusionService is listed and Started there still.

Please let me know if you still run into any trouble at all.

Thanks!

Yeah, nothing related to DisplayFusion in any of those places - it must be something else doing it. ???

Strange! Not sure what it would be then, but one thing you can try is using Process Monitor (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-ca/sysinternals/bb896645.aspx) to see which process is writing to the C:\Windows\System32\oobe\info\backgrounds folder. To do that, in the Process Monitor Filter window, add a Path filter for any path that contains C:\Windows\System32\oobe\info\backgrounds. See the attached screenshot for reference.

Hope that helps, good luck tracking it down!

Cheers! I'll try that.

Got to say, I'm impressed by support who assist with likely-unrelated issues. :D

EDIT:
I'll be damned - it was Mouse Without Borders. Didn't expect Microsoft's app to do that unannounced.

Thanks for helping me tracking it down. :)

EDIT 2:
I had some inspiration to deny write access by SYSTEM to that folder, and it works to deny access to Mouse Without Borders (and probably other boot-time applications :P) , but allow user-run applications like Tweaks Logon access.

Awesome, glad to hear you found the culprit! I had no idea that Mouse Without Borders had that Functionality. What a weird feature to include! http://www.intowindows.com/how-to-automatically-set-bing-search-pictures-as-windows-7-logon-background/
