I was fooling around in another thread and got Wallpaper Engine to flicker... but it was regardless of DisplayFusion settings or even running... so I don't know what that means for you guys.

Make sure this setting is off in Wallpaper Engine. It repeatedly launches some program to reset Windows wallpaper settings and about 20% of the time, this causes a black flash for me.

Since only Wallpaper Engine should be touching wallpapers... make sure Display Fusion wallpaper handling is disabled and for Windows, set the background to a solid color. And make sure that the settings actually stick. The Wallpaper Engine checkbox seems to reset itself, so you might have to make the changes several times before Wallpaper Engine stops goofing off.

The Wallpaper Engine checkbox needs to stay off between restarts and the Windows wallpaper needs to stay a solid color.

It is extremely easy to replicate. It happens on all machines I have tried this on. Just enable displayfusion taskbars on all monitors and use any wallpaper engine wallpaper. I have completely given up on this feature, even thought I used it for years with no issues. Hopefully this is fixed at some point, and I hope this post serves as a reminder for the devs.

Let me share a personal story with you.

I have my PC running for days or weeks without a reboot. After some amount of time, WinForms painting would start to get corrupted. Updated text would show up in the wrong location. A highlighted button would show its new form in the wrong location. It happened to me for years, maybe a decade.

I was convinced that Microsoft was just unaware of this weird bug since most people sleep, reboot or logoff from their computers. Scouring the internet, I could only find bare mentions of anyone describing something similar. All of the PCs that I had would show this behavior eventually and rebooting always fixed it. I figured there was no way I could make Microsoft care about this bug.

After a very long time, I randomly decided to stop using this window management system utility. And the problem went away. It should have had nothing to do with my problem, but it apparently did. I was certain that other people would see my problem if they ran their PCs for long enough, but the problem was this esoteric utility that I used on every computer I had.

--

I am telling you that I've used Display Fusion and Wallpaper Engine for years and have never seen your "extremely easy to replicate" issue. Please consider that it's not as easy to replicate as you think it is because of differences that you might not consider important. -- Owen has said that your issue sounded similar to other issues and that your logs showed that your symptom probably happened after a tray icon update every minute. That combined with the fact that turning off multi-tray icons helped you gave him more evidence, so he was willing to correlate the issues. I don't see anything about BFS recreating your exact issue, though.

All Owen said is that they have a similar issue that they can reproduce. They have not said they have reproduced this issue with Wallpaper Engine. Considering that I do not have your issue, even if they fixed the issue they know about, that does not mean it will fix your issue. It also means that your issue is not necessarily wide-spread. You might have another thing that is playing a hand in these interactions and causing an issue you can observe. I may not have that 3rd piece of the puzzle, so I've never seen it.
Happens with any wallpaper engine wallpaper. I've spent hours changing settings on both displayfusion and wallpaper engine. Nothing works. I just accepted defeat and decided to wait for a fix and disable dp taskbars. It's frustrating because this only started happening when I upgraded to Windows 11. On 10 it wasn't a problem. It's been almost a year and I've learned to live without the displayfusion taskbars, but it was very useful and one of the reasons I bought the program in the first place.

They seem to know why this is happening based on Owen's previous comments, so if there was an option I could change that would fix it I believe he would have told me by now. I am also curious on why this is happening since windows 10 and 11 are not that much different but only they can go into detail about that.
