It does not work as long as the window is maximized. That will prevent it from receiving the "focus lost" message when you click on something else. It can cause some weird side effects though, so I can't say 100% whether that will be a good workaround.

Other than that, there wouldn't be a way to prevent the focus from switching when clicking on another taskbar, no. The same would happen if you had a window focused on monitor 2, and clicked the Start button on the Windows taskbar.
