Perhaps some Windows system files are corrupt? You can try the following two commands to repair Windows and the .NET Framework to see if that makes any difference at all:

sfc /scannow
dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth

So, I took the liberty of enabling logging and trying to make some sense of this error.
1.: I should have been more specific in describing the problem. What happens is that if i open a displayfusion window, it shows me the splash screen and then the error message. The splash screen timeouts and disappears.
2.: The "DisplayFusionSettings.exe" does not have any problems itself. If i copy the arguments from the log file, it opens correctly.
3.: I'll just attach the log file for your own perusal.

I don't know where in Steam I could get the key. There is a Licence Key value in the log file though. If that is not what you need, you'll have to explain how to find the key.

I looks like there is a 1 day licensing period before it has to be reactivated through steam.
If steam is not active, it will work until the current period runs out. If steam is active it will just continue working. But if steam is not active it doesn't suffice to start steam and try again, but I have to restart the computer (making sure that displayfusion is not in autostart), start steam, and then start displayfusion. Not quite so easy to track this down
