Yep, that was the problem. Seems to work fine now. Good catch, thanks!

Note: This still has the side-effect I mentioned earlier of moving the DisplayFusion tray icon to head of the list -- so in that respect it's not an improvement the shortcut way of doing it.

I've sort of worked around that issue by customizing my notifications so DisplayFusion's icon is always hidden by default so the it's moving is no longer an issue.
I've noticed one minor issue with the shortcut technique of achieving this. While it saves the desktop icon positions just fine, it has an annoying side-effect of causing the DisplayFusion icon in the system tray to move itself to the beginning (left-hand edge) of the items in the tray. This is irritating because that I then need to move it back where I want it to be each time.

Just another reason to make it a built-in Function, in my opinion...

Keith,

Since sending my last message I'd already discovered the program settings to suppress the save prompts on my own and suspected there was probably some command-line argument to some DisplayFusion*.exe that would trigger an icon profile save, just wasn't sure which and what it was -- so the information you finally provided was just what I needed -- thanks!

For anyone else who might reading this, there's a (complete?) list of command-line arguments for the DisplayFusionCommand.exe executable in the FAQ:,

I think the easiest thing your development team to do would be to create a new built-in Function to do this and put it in the "Desktop Icons" section on the Functions tab:

This way the new feature would be smoothly integrated into the program.

Cheers.

Sorry about the delay. Got tied up yesterday and didn't have a chance to do some work in the Discussions.
I thought I'd be able to attach the shortcut file here, but it just wants to attach the EXE that the shortcut points to instead, so I'll just post up the instructions

Navigate to C:\Program Files (x86)\DisplayFusion

Right-click and drag DisplayFusionCommand.exe to your desktop, choosing "Create shortcut here" from the menu that pops up when you release the mouse

Right-click the new shortcut, choose Properties

At the end of the target box, add -desktopiconsave "Desktop Layout", so that it looks like the attached screenshot, then click OK

You can rename the shortcut itself on the desktop if you like, by right-clicking it and choosing Rename

If you'd like to hide the confirmation prompts, you can enable the two Advanced Settings shown in the attached screenshot

Hope that helps! Please let me know if you run into any trouble at all. I'll also add a feature request to our list for a quicker way to save the Desktop Icon Profile that doesn't involve so many steps
My profile is called "Desktop Layout".

I'd also like to know how to do this my self, if it's not obvious from what you do/send me -- as I didn't see anything in the online help about how to do something like that. The closest related thing I found was something on the Function tab to "Load Desktop Icon Profile: Desktop Layout", but there doesn't seem to be one to save a profile.

Thanks for the reply and offer Keith.

The current Desktop Icon Profiles "feature" is overkill as well as very awkward to use at least for someone who just uses one main configuration -- which I think might be a large number of your users.

For example, after changing my desktop icon layout and wanting to save it, I have to right click on the DisplayFusion system tray icon, move the mouse cursor down over Desktop Icon item on the pop-up menu in order to view a Save Profile item on a first-level pop-out menu, then move horizontally over to it select the profile name further down on a second-level pop-out menu -- all of which requires a fairly steady horizontal and vertical mouse/hand movements so as to not "slip-off" any of the displayed pop-out menu which would require having to start the whole process over.

After doing all that, I have to also confirm I want to overwrite the named profile and then, finally, dismiss the confirmation dialog that appears after indicating, Yes, that's what I wanted to do.

There should be a super simple and fast way to a least save (if not also load) some sort of current icon profile. The save operation is more important, since that's the one used the most, at for folks with a bunch of profiles.
