This is a good idea in theory, and I always try to keep the interface as simple as I can. However, I don't like the idea of adding in any sort of data collection, even if it is anonymous. DisplayFusion already has a collection of advanced settings (can be manually edited through the registry) and I'm thinking of adding an "Advanced" tab in version 3.2 to allow people to edit them more easily. You're right though, it is a fine line between features and bloat. I'm always open to ideas for UI design though - thanks!

Hi Jon,

With every new release new options will be added, may it be new features or options for workarounds for some special system configurations. In some point of time, DisplayFusion will look like a typical open source software: a giant options dialog with dozens of sub-menus, radio buttons, checkmarks, lists and so on (clarification: I have nothing against open source!).

My idea to prevent this: collect anonymous usage statistics of the defined settings. http://geekandpoke.typepad.com/.a/6a00d8341d3df553ef0120a6d65b8a970b-pi, but if there aren't enough people who use it, this might by an idea.
Of course, this should be done if the user allows to collect data and it has to be really anonymous.

I guess there are already some really good programs available to collect and analyze these information. Unfortunatelly I didn't find one... I'm an experienced PHP programmer but a bad designer. Let me know if you need assistance.

Some applications offer an option in the settings dialog like "Expert settings". But I think this is just a workaround or bad excuse for an overloaded options dialog...

Regards,
Carsten
