If you press the Windows key during the game, instead of Alt-Tab, does that work to release the mouse from the game, without needing to have another window already open?

Unfortunately there's nothing we can do about the game receiving focus when a window is minimized. When you minimize a window, Windows itself will give focus back to whatever program previously had focus, which would be the game. Same with Alt-Tab, pressing Alt-Tab once will give focus to the last used program.

I'll try to reproduce that "ghosting" issue here, as I'm not sure why that would be happening.

Regarding the Strobelight issue, it looks like they posted a solution in that thread, hopefully it helped

I bought DF because of this feature , although it's kind of buggy, for example , im running my game full screen and on second monitor I wanted to surf the web, well I choose a shortcut ALT+A, I can hear the sound it makes when it activates , but I still need to use ALT-TAB to get my mouse over to the other screen , that means I must have any sort of window open in the background to be able to use alt-tab because the game doesn't minimize it's locked there. if no previous window was open I need to click ctrl alt delete .. ( game is Darkfall Unholy Wars ) but BF4 and others does the same..
also once im on the other screen and use the web or other window , most of the times when I minimize a window it brings me back to my game, then I need to alt_atb again but it opens the last window I minimized , so most of the time im stuck with 20+ windows on second screen because if I minimize them it brings me back to the game(my cursor)

other big issue is when im starting to use my second monitor , ( this will be hard to explain ) but my widows will go in like Ghost mode ,kind of like when you minimize a page and it minimize but still on your screen and you cant move or touch it , but it's also kinda faded out is why I call it ghost mode.. very weird and annoying because then I need to get back in my game, disable window deactivation , minimize my game then everything is back to normal .. I was able to produce it wile typing this, I will attach a picture and you can see the folder was actually X'ed out but it stayed there as ghost.

my last issue is , I use Strobelight , not sure if your familiar with that program , it's Strobelight Beta 3 by ToastX , that tool is for gaming monitors 120hz +. it's a epic zero motion blur tool , http://www.blurbusters.com/zero-motion-blur/lightboost/
well as soon I enable Window deactivation it disables my Strobelight , very weird no idea why but I've wrote to blur busters to see if it was a problem with lightboost or DF here http://forums.blurbusters.com/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=71&p=380#p380

thanks.
