DisplayFusion can be configured to automatically load a Wallpaper Profile or Desktop Icon Profile when a specific Monitor Profile is loaded or detected. This is especially helpful if Windows moves your Desktop Icons around on restarts.
As soon as DisplayFusion starts up and detects your previously saved Monitor Profile, it will automatically load the associated Wallpaper and Desktop Icon Profiles without intervention.
  • Open the DisplayFusion Monitor Configuration window by right-clicking the DisplayFusion tray icon and clicking "Monitor Configuration" (also accessible via the Options tab in Settings).
    Tray Menu - Monitor Configuration
  • Click the "Manage Monitor Profiles" button.
    Manage Monitor Profiles

  • Click the "Wallpaper Profile" or "Desktop Icon Profile" button, and choose the appropriate Wallpaper or Desktop Icon Profile.
    Select Wallpaper Profile
If you need to load a Monitor Profile via the command line, you can use displayfusioncommand.exe (located in the directory where DisplayFusion is installed).
The command is as follows:
displayfusioncommand.exe -monitorloadprofile "profile name"
Load Monitor from Command Line
If you'd like to load a Monitor Profile automatically on startup, you can create a shortcut in your startup folder that will run the command in the previous section.
For the full set of instructions, see Loading a Monitor Profile on Startup.
There are a few Monitor Configuration related settings in the DisplayFusion Settings > Advanced Settings window. The most useful one is the option to disable the confirmation prompt when changing monitor settings. If you switch Monitor Profiles often, you may wish to disable this prompt to make the process easier.
Note: If for some reason your monitors are unusable after a settings change, DisplayFusion won't be able to revert back to the original settings if the confirmation prompt is disabled. You'd likely need to reboot your machine to make the displays usable again.
  • Open the DisplayFusion Settings window by right-clicking the DisplayFusion tray icon and clicking "Settings."
    Tray Menu - Settings
  • Click the Advanced Settings button.
    Advanced Settings
  • Search for and double-click "Don't Show Confirmation Prompt" Setting.
    Settings
  • Select "Confirmation prompts are not shown" and click OK.

I'd like to have a user-specific monitor configuration profile that loads when that user logs in. I have noticed that each user can create and name their own profile, but that when a user logs in the profile that appears is the last one that was used by the previous user.

@Patrick: While the Profiles are per-user, DisplayFusion isn't actually loading the previous user's profile. Windows itself remembers the last monitor configuration, and DisplayFusion just shows in the Monitor Configuration that the current configuration matches a specific Monitor Profile.

If you want to load specific Monitor Profiles on user login, you could create a batch file or login script to load the profile using DisplayFusionCommand.exe -monitorloadprofile "profile name"

Where does DisplayFusion store the Monitor Configuration and Monitor Profile files? I haven't found them in the installation directory nor in the user's AppData directory. Just want to back them up, just in case.

@Alex: They're stored in the registry. You can back them up, along with all of your other settings using the "Export Settings" button on the DisplayFusion Settings Options tab :)

That would be a hardware issue, not a DisplayFusion issue. You'd have to see if the nVidia drivers support switching between primary cards, I suspect that this isn't supported.

Windows 10, Anniversary update. I have a Disable monitor profile for playing games (No point having 2 monitors active while playing, distracting). I find when I disable the second monitor via profile, and then re-enable it. It becomes the primary and everything moves over to it. It is correctable, but rather annoying. Let me know what info would be helpful, and if you want a discrete issue post.

Hello Kieth,

I have found this to be, through troubleshooting, a Windows 10ism. What I discovered, and then remembered, is that my "Secondary Monitor", was really "Monitor 1" and the monitor I use as my primary was internally "Monitor 2". Windows 7 and Display Fusion worked just fine with this. However, Windows 10 seems to really want "Monitor 1" as the primary, no matter how you configure things. I have not done the due diligence of following up on the Microsoft Forums for this to see if anyone else has seen this.

I've attached the short version of my configuration, but also did the support request as you suggested.

Many thanks,
-Paul D.

Is it possible to automatically switch between monitor profiles based on location or connected WiFi? Typically, the SSID you connect to at Work will be different to the one you connect to at home. Since I use a laptop and leave it on 24/7 (occasionally let it sleep or hibernate), I won't be able to automatically load my profiles at startup or user logon. I've configured keyboard shortcuts to switch between profiles, but it's all about automation in today's world.

Furthermore, is it possible to override the native Windows display order settings? For example, I have a laptop and 2 monitors configured like so:

Laptop | Monitor1 | Monitor2

In Windows display settings, the order in which they would be identified are as follows:

1 | 3 | 2

Monitor1 is the middle monitor and is set as my main display. I want it to be setup like so:

3 | 1 | 2

The reason is because I use DisplayFusion to move Windows between monitors. I've configured it like so:
- Move Window to "Previous" monitor = ALT + Left
- Move Window to "Next" monitor = ALT + Right

As you can see, this wouldn't work well in the 1 | 3 | 2 configuration. Moving a Window from 3 to 1 would be a ALT + Right combination, which is confusing as you'd expect to use ALT + Left. Obviously, the easy solution here is to switch the key bindings around and I've tried that already. It works fine while I'm at home with 2 monitors, but the same problem occurs when I'm at work with 4 monitors. The more monitors you add, the messed up the monitor ordering is in native Windows display. I've tried changing the cables between the monitors to re-organize the ordering, but I cannot order them the way I want.

@chaos: That might be possible using a Scripted Function, I'll see what I can find out.

Regarding re-ordering the IDs, that's not possible, but the DF Move to Next/Previous functions should always go left/right, it's not based on the numbers themselves. If you open the display settings and click "Identify," do the numbers on the monitors match the numbers in the display settings?

Hi Keith,

Thanks for your reply. The IDs do match against the Windows display settings. However, the screen moves right or left depending on the ID.

E.g. at work, my screen is ordered like this:

2 | 4 | 3
1

Move Window to "Next" monitor will essentially move my window from monitor 1, to 2, then 3 and 4. As you can see, this is confusing when you look at the monitors directly, as you'd expect them to move smoothly from one screen to the next.

Yeah, that's very strange indeed! Can you attach a copy of your troubleshooting info?
  • Open the Settings > Troubleshooting tab
  • Click the "Copy to Clipboard" button
  • Paste the text into a text file (please don't paste the text directly into your reply, the formatting gets garbled and makes it difficult to parse)
  • Reply with the file attached

Is there a way when making a secondary profile, to disable the primary (1) monitor? Every time I try to do this, I get no error, but it always stays enabled.

I've got 4 displays, 3 of which I typically use at the same time in one room, the 4th is a TV in the other room, that I like to game on sometimes. I need this display disabled most of the time, but in order for games to function properly (different resolutions and refresh rates on the various displays), I need to be able to disable all the other monitors, and enable the TV exclusively, which makes it the primary.

I can make this work even with the primary display enabled, by using a hot key to switch to the second profile (which has Display 1 (monitor) and 2 (TV) enabled with the other two auxiliary displays disabled, then using Win+P and telling that to use the secondary display only, then of course, I have to repeat all these steps to get back to my primary configuration. It's very in-elegant. In fact, this is my primary reason for trying DisplayFusion. Without this software, it's even worse, since no matter how many displays you have, Win+P will only list the primary and secondary as an option, and forces me to have the TV "enabled" which extends the desktop there, and causes me to lose windows there occasionally.

Anyway, if I'm missing something, please let me know, if not, assuming there's not a technical limitation, please consider adding this feature.

Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Edit: NM, I figured it out. For anybody wondering, you can't disable the "Primary" monitor in a profile, until you make another monitor the primary, and you can't make a monitor the primary, until it's actively enabled. In my case I was coming from a profile that had the 4th display disabled, was re-enabling it in a new profile config, and trying to disable all the others, but until I actually "applied" the setting with that display enabled, I couldn't make it the primary, and couldn't disable the previous "primary".

Not sure if this is as intended or not, but I wanted to relay my solution here in case someone else has the same issue.

Thanks!

Does anyone know why DisplayFusion 9.3 keeps adding asterisk sign * to profile name upon saving?
Sep 22, 2018  • #19
Keith Lammers (BFS)'s profile on WallpaperFusion.com
@grocal: The asterisk indicates a profile that was saved using an older version of DisplayFusion. If you're running 9.3 and you save or overwrite a profile, the asterisk should get removed.

Hi Guys, is there a profile picker function button that has a drop down list (versus next in alpha list)? If I have a lot of profiles, I might have to cycle through too many different configurations where some monitors might be upsidedown (when switched from landscape to portrait). Thanks!

There's a Scripted Function in the repository that will do this. Here's how to set it up:

  • On the DisplayFusion Settings > Functions tab, click the "Download Scripted" button
  • Double-click the script named "Select Monitor Profile from Drop-Down List"
  • Give it a key combination and click OK
  • Optionally, select it, click "Toggle TitleBar Button" (to add it to the caption bar of every application)
  • Click Apply and test it out

Hope that helps!

I've got a similar problem: I've got two monitors attached for work and three more for gaming to my RTX2080. As long as I don't reboot the computer I can switch between my profiles. After a reboot Display Fusion still displays a message when switching to another profile but the currently active display remain active and nothing happens.

Just trying to make sure I understand what Monitor Profiles does.
Will this switch everything that's on the main (center) monitor with a side one, or will this simply change the logical layout of physical monitors from "Left, Center, Right" to "Center, Left, Right"? If that makes any sense....
Feb 26, 2020  • #27
Keith Lammers (BFS)'s profile on WallpaperFusion.com
@WhiteWolf: Monitor Profiles are for saving and loading different monitor configurations. For example, let's say you have 3 monitors, and sometimes you like to have just 1 monitor enabled, other times you like to have all 3 enabled. You could save a profile for each of those configurations, and then use DisplayFusion to quickly load whichever one you need.

Hope that makes sense!

Aha. It does. I don't suppose anyone knows of a way to swap the contents of two monitors quickly and easily, do they? I'm a Streamer, but I don't wanna go moving my keyboard and mouse around to turn from a Main monitor to a Gaming monitor, but I also don't want to risk stuff like names of my Steam Friends being broadcast by accident.
I was hoping Monitor Profiles could do this. Swap the center monitor with the left one, which would be empty.

@WhiteWolf: Ah ok. On the Settings > Functions tab, you can download scripted functions. If you grab the one called "Swap All Windows Between Two Monitors" and give it a hotkey, it will prompt you to choose two monitors, and it will then swap the open windows between both of them.

Hope that helps!

I have two monitor configurations for work, with four different monitors. Each configuration uses three monitors. I have had these profiles setup for a long time and have always worked switching with a keybind. Suddenly, maybe 2 or 3 updates ago, I can no longer load either profile with the keybind or by selecting it in the drop list.

Here's the error I'm getting:

An error has occurred while applying your new Monitor configuration.
Please check your settings and try again.
Error: Failed to call SetDisplayConfig. [HR: 87]
[System.Exception]

I've tried the two most recent beta editions and neither fixes it.

In my "solo" profile there are no cloned monitors (all extend). In my "Collaboration" profile one is mirrored and the other two extend. But regardless of which one I'm on (doing it manually), switching to the other one errors with the same error.

Hi all!

We've just released a new DisplayFusion Beta version and the Error 87 issue should hopefully be fixed up.

Could you try updating, and if your profiles still throw an Error 87 when trying to load them, try re-saving the profiles?

Please let me know how it works out :)

DisplayFusion works great with all apps except for Microsoft Edge. I have a default configuration with Outlook and Microsoft ToDo and Edge on my second monitor. Outlook and ToDo kick over to the second monitor when I startup or use the shortcut key. But Edge never goes over, no matter how many times I save the configuration. I always have to drag it over. Is there a special way to make it work or an upcoming release?

Is there a way to make switching monitor resolutions when specific applications are launched?

I'm using DLDSR and some games in borderless. I'd like it to change to the 4k resolution when a specific game or application is launched and then revert back to the original resolution when closed. Is this possible?

You can use our triggers (guide on that here: https://www.displayfusion.com/HelpGuide/Triggers/) to have a monitor profile loaded automatically when your application is launched and closed.

Hi,

anyone know if it's possible to manually reorder monitor profiles ?

I can't find any option about this in Profile Management windows and because it does not seem to follow alphabetical order I can't even cheat by prefixing names.

If not, I think it would be a nice fonctionnality for a following update :)

(As it's my first post here, I also want to thank the BinaryFortress team because this piece of software is really great)

Monitor profiles will be sorted alphabetically, but newly saved profiles will be sorted before old ones. If you have any profiles saved from older versions with an asterisks (*) beside them, you can re-save them and they should be sorted in with the main list.

I've also added manually sorting them to our feature request list.

Thanks for the kind words as well!

Right ! I had old profiles which made me miss the alphabetical sorting of the new ones.

I'm now updating them all and prefixing their name so i can have the prefered order. It works perfectly. Thank you.
