In Settings > Advanced Settings, you'll want to use the "Button Size Override: Width" option. I've found that setting it to somewhere between 25 and 30 is a pretty good value if you want them to be narrower than the defaults.

In fact, the compatibility rule horizontal offset doesn't appear to be used at all properly - if I set it to -1 or 10 or -20, I get the same position of the buttons when the Advanced Setting is in place. It looks like the overlap is caused by the "TitleBar Buttons: Button Offset: Horizontal" option being set to 60 in the Settings > Advanced Settings. Once I removed that, I could remove the Compatibility rule and they wouldn't overlap with the Word caption buttons.

Regarding the vertical alignment, it looks like the Office 2016 apps don't shrink their caption buttons when maximized, like normal windows with standard window chrome do. They overlap the built-in buttons and are too high when maximized. They also seem to adjust position when maximizing/restoring the window strangely.

My other Office 2016 apps look about the same with the existing compatibility settings I have put in to fix the non-maximized toolbar buttons.
