Hey guys,

Love the product! I just updated to Windows 8.1 and after playing with the native multi-monitor taskbar I realized I wasn't able to pin anything to my secondary monitors, so I installed my old friend displayfusion.

I am able to pin what I need now, however I notice whenever I click the start button on one of my secondary monitors, the start menu always opens on the primary monitor. I liked that on native taskbar, it would open on whatever screen it was click on.

Is there a way to duplicate this with displayfusion? Or is that not a feature at this time?

Thanks!
Bill

Try this, just to see if my machine does the same as yours. Click on the Start button on your secondary monitor and the Start menu opens on the primary monitor. Click the Start button again and it disappears right? Now click it a third time, does it open on your secondary screen, mine does so just wondering.

And, so it seems, opens on the secondary or right monitor until I reboot the machine so in short it only happens the first time it is clicked.

I am also having this issue and I would like to know of a fix to solve this or be advised of the setting I am missing

It is rather annoying, Why have a second or third start button if its going to open in the main screen?

I am using Start8 to simulate the Win 7 Start Menu, are you using any third party app?

PS. When Jon or Keith comes along I am sure they will have an answer to this :)

Are any of you using any Start Menu replacement apps (Start8, Classic Shell StartIsBack... etc)? Are you using Windows 8.0 or 8.1? Thanks!

Sorry Alan, I saw that you were using Start8, but are you experiencing the same issues as these other fellows? If so, what version of Start8 are you using, and have you installed Windows 8.1 Update yet?

I am using Start8 v1.41 (latest version and Win 8.1 with Update 1. My issue is that when I click on the secondary screen Start button the Start menu opens on the primary screen but only the once. There after it opens on the correct screen until a restart. as it only happens the first time I click the start button each day its not such a problem as the others are experiencing.

@William and Brent: Can you try the following?
  • Right-click the Windows taskbar and choose "Properties"
  • On the Navigation tab, enable the "Show Start on the display I'm using..." option
  • Click OK, and try the Start button on the DF taskbar again

Thanks!

Since the last update, my start menu only opens on the primary screen. I tried the instructions in the post above but it did nothing.

Scratch that! A reboot sorted it out :)

Hi guys,

I do have the same problem Alan describes in #2 but unfortunately the solution Keith mentioned (clicking 'Show Start on the Display I'm using when I press the Windows logo key' ) didn't help for me.

I didn't have the problem during v5.0, so I think it was introduced somehow in between the 6.0 betas. Unfortunately I can't find a 5.x Installer to verify that. Any Ideas?

By the way I am using:
Start8 1.45
DisplayFusion 6.1.2 (Steam Edition)
Windows 8.1 Pro German (all updates installed as of 9/16/2014)

Thx, Zefiris

@Zefiris: Could you send over a debug log? Here are the steps:
You can disable DisplayFusion from trying to set the wallpaper by doing the following:
  • On the Troubleshooting tab, change the Logging drop-down to "Logging: Important Only"
  • Restart DisplayFusion (wait a minute for the hooks to fully start)
  • Try the Start button a few times note the time so we'll know where to check in the log file
  • Send us the DisplayFusion.log and DebugInfo.html files (can be found by clicking the Open Log button on the Troubleshooting tab)
  • Disable debug logging after sending the log

Thanks!

Hello Keith,

attached are the log-files.
I pressed the second screen start button several times at around 21:40.

- 1st click : menu opens on primary screen
- 2nd click: menu closes on primary screen
- 3rd click: menu opens on secondary screen
- 4th click: menu closes on secondary screen
- from now on repeating #3 and #4

Btw. It seems the clear log button doesnt work. I get a message that the log was cleared but the data is still there.

Thx, Zefiris

Actually I am not sure anymore if that really wasn't a problem with DF 5.x, but unfortunately I can't find a 5.x installer to verify that.

Here's a link to 5.1.1: http://www.binaryfortress.com/Files/DisplayFusion/DisplayFusionSetup-5.1.1.exe

To clarify, it opens on the Primary monitor the first couple of times after applying the settings, but after that it opens correctly on the second monitor?

When clicking the start menu button on the secondary Monitor for the fist time after starting the PC, it opens on the primary monitor.
After that it always appears on the correct monitor until restart.
Even if I am working with the PC for several hours but didn't use the start menu button on the secondary monitor so far it also happens.

And yes after entering the DF settings and either clicking apply or OK this behavior appears again. Clicking cancel in settings it doesn't.

I did some extensive testing:

OK, I tested DF 5.1.1 in trial mode. And as I stated in my first post, 5.x version doesn't have the problem.
Here is what I did in detail:

- uninstalled DF 7.0.0 beta 1 including all settings
- restarted PC
- used CCleaner to remove unused registry entries and unused files (it seems nothing DF related was done here)
- installed DF 5.1.1 in trial mode. Install directory C:\Program Files (x86)\DisplayFusion
- changed language setting from german to english via Taskbar Icon -> Language -> English (United States)
- nothing else was changed in the settings
- restarted PC
- opened settings via right click on taskbar icon -> Troubleshooting -> enabled logging (important only) - > Apply -> close Window
- left click on start button on secondary Monitor (menu opens on secondary Monitor)
- again left click on start button on secondary Monitor (menu closes on secondary Monitor)

- again left click on start button on secondary Monitor (menu opens on secondary Monitor)
- again left click on start button on secondary Monitor (menu closes on secondary Monitor)
- left click on start button on primary Monitor (menu opens on primary Monitor)
- again left click on start button on primary Monitor (menu closes on primary Monitor)
- again left click on start button on primary Monitor (menu opens on primary Monitor)
- again left click on start button on primary Monitor (menu closes on primary Monitor)
- opened settings via right click on Taskbar Icon -> Troubleshooting -> disabled logging - > Apply -> close Window
nothing else was done in between these actions.

The start menu opens as expected on the monitor the start menu button was clicked on.
Log files are attached.

then I reinstalled DF 6.1.2:
- uninstalled DF 5.1.1 including all settings
- restarted PC
- used CCleaner to remove unused registry entries and unused files (it seems nothing DF related was done here)
- completely removed DisplayFusion install directory manually
- installed DF 6.1.2 in trial mode. (for better comparison I also wanted to use the nomal installer and not the Steam-Version) Install directory C:\Program Files (x86)\DisplayFusion
- uninstalled DF 6.1.2 because trial mode already expired (no secondary taskbar)
- installed DF 6.1.2 via Steam
- started DF 6.1.2 via Steam once
- changed settings to display taskbar on all monitors (Enable Multi-Monitor Taskbars) since it was disabled by default -> Apply
- changed language setting from german to english via Taskbar Icon -> Language -> English (United States) -> Apply
- nothing else was changed in the settings
- restarted PC
- opened settings via right click on taskbar icon -> Troubleshooting -> enabled logging (important only) - > Apply -> close Window
- left click on start button on secondary Monitor (menu opens on primary Monitor)
- again left click on start button on secondary Monitor (menu closes on primary Monitor)

The start menu opens on the primary monitor despite clicking the start menu button on the secondary monitor, but only the first time, then the behavior is as expected

Thanks!

Hello WouterNL, Keith

I don't have any problems so far with 7.2 and the start menu opening on the primary monitor only.

But I have a small problem which might be related:

So just like my previous problem with the start menu, now the User-Image of the Start8 start menu appears on the primary monitor the first time I click the start putton on the secondary monitor. The start menu itself appears correctly on the secondary monitor.

I didn't have this problem during the 7.2 betas.

Yeah, the Start8 menu behaves a bit strangely when we move it. We worked on it for ages to try and fix it but unfortunately it's about as good as it's going to get for now. We've reached out to the Start8 devs to see if they can help us out, but haven't heard anything back yet. We'll definitely post an update if we're able to fix that up though!

Thanks Wouter! It seems to work for me here. Do you have the "Launch Start menu shortcuts on current monitor" option enabled on the Settings > Taskbar tab? If so, and it's still not working, can you send me a debug log?
  • On the Troubleshooting tab, change the Logging drop-down to "L1: Log Minimal"
  • Restart DisplayFusion
  • Launch a program from the Classic Start Menu on monitor 2
  • Send us the DisplayFusion.log and DebugInfo.html files (can be found by clicking the Open Log button on the Troubleshooting tab)
  • Disable debug logging after sending the log
