Hi, have triple 1080 monitors and would like to switch to 4k, although one at a time because of cost. Is this possible in Windows 7 and DisplayFusion?

Thanks!

As long as your video card can support 4K, there shouldn't be a problem running 1 4K with 2 1080p monitors, though if you're using NVIDIA Surround or AMD Eyefinity, I'm not sure how well that would work.

I'm running three 4k monitors on Windows 7 but there are a couple of things to be aware of.

1. Win7 has a maximum display size of something around 8k (either horizontal or vertical, the exact number escapes me at the moment). This means you can run three 4k monitors in portrait mode, or two in landscape. BUT...

2. NVIDIA drivers enforce this limit. AMD drivers do not. So I am currently running three 4k monitors, two in landscape (left and right sides) and one in portrait (center) on a single 580 series card, on Windows 7. They're connected using Display Port, and all monitors are running at 60 Hz (59.9966 Hz actually).

3. My usage is strictly office, no gaming. I've learned that I don't need multiple video cards (I had three 480 cards at one point, one per monitor), in fact performance was worse because of the overhead Crossfire introduces. What's worked best for me is a single, (factory) overclocked video card. The higher frequency makes the GUI more responsive. GPU monitoring I've done shows that I am barely using what this 580 card is capable of, but I need this powerful a card so the idle-speed responsiveness is acceptable. The 480 series card will work, the 580 is much much better. (While I am tempted to upgrade to a Vega-56, I'm not ready to mortgage my soul for what they cost.)

4. What hits the GUI in Windows 7 is Aero, the thing that makes Win7 windows "prettier" than Windows 10. If you can be happy with the Basic color scheme in Windows 7, the GUI will be smoother.

5. While GUI performance is pretty good, it is not as smooth as 1080p. Remember, with three 4k monitors, that is the equivalent of running *12* 1080p monitors! There are some hiccups. For example, if the monitors (I have 3 LG monitors) go to sleep, when they come back on the display (GUI) will revert from Aero to Basic. (I think this has something to do with the LG monitors, but I don't have any other 4k monitors I can swap out to test this.) There is a lot of screen flashing while this is happening and it takes 10-15sec to settle down. But then I just re-enable Aero from the right-click|Personalize screen.

6. Don't bother calling your video card manufacturer. They will tell you what you are doing is not supported and so far outside the norm they won't be able to help.

7. The maximum display size in Windows 10 is something like 64k in either direction, and because of the simpler GUI display elements, the GUI is more responsive.

8. As to DisplayFusion in particular, wallpaper changes more often than every 60sec will hit the GUI as DF is building the wallpaper in the background. This was particularly noticeable with the 480 cards, not so much with the 580 card. So far most of the other parts of DF I use are not much affected by the monitor size per se.

9. If you plan on gaming with three 4k monitors, just bite the bullet and upgrade to Windows 10. You'll have better driver support and the gaming companies are increasingly devoting their resources to Windows 10, not Windows 7.

Good luck!
