Hi Keith,

just noticed there's already the 3.5.0. BETA :)

This is a follow-up to my former 3.4.0 feedback thread:
http://www.displayfusion.com/Discussions/View/several-bugs-in-3-4-0-with-windows-vista/?ID=e1ffaf1e-f388-4705-b218-f1f3d9c1468a

1. The width of the Vista taskbar preview popup has become smaller. It worked fine in 3.4.1. and matched that of Vista, but now it's too small (see left):
http://www.abload.de/img/taskbarpreview2hjvp.jpg

2. The start button of the DF taskbar (right) looks not the same like the Vista one (left). I didn't notice that before b/c of a dark wallpaper. Is that fixable?
http://www.abload.de/img/startbutton35jn8.jpg

3. The new try feature looks fine, however I notices that animated tray icons like the one from avast! are not fluid, is this a limitation of the implementation or can it be optimized?

4. Do you have plans to also mirror the Vista system icons like Volume, Network and Battery?
http://www.abload.de/img/systemicons3qr0t.jpg

5. There was a left-over which you were working on regarding the too small space between minimized windows and other elements of the taskbar like the clock, is there any update on this?

6. Any update on the flashing bugs in Vista?
- if you switch between windows which are located on the second screen, they flash on the Windows taskbar for some milliseconds and then disappear again
- when clicking the DF taskbar clock, you can see the calendar popup flashing over the deafult Windows taskbar clock for some milliseconds just before it is moved to the other screen

7. Just wanted to ask about the other features I requested, any plans for 3.5.0?
- highlighting of all Start menu buttons when clicking one of them (currently only the Vista start button is highlighted)
- A popup when hovering over the DF taskbar clock like for the Windows clock:
http://h13.abload.de/img/issue045ydak.jpg

I'll come back to you if I notice any other issues, just starting testing :)

Best regards

Stefan

1. Are your monitors different resolutions/aspect ratios?

2. I hadn't noticed this before either. We'll check it out and see if there's anything we can do.

3. Unfortunately we can't fix this at the moment, as the tray icons need to be updated on a regular interval, but increasing that interval would affect performance.

4. The Vista system icons seem to be mirroring fine for me. Are none of them showing up in your DisplayFusion tray?

5. We still haven't had a chance to fix this one up, but we're still planning to :)

6. This issue unfortunately can't be fixed up :(

7. We're still considering whether to highlight all of the Start buttons or not. As for the hover popup, we can't implement it at the moment, as we would have to create it from scratch, localize it, etc which unfortunately isn't feasible right now. Sorry!

Hi Keith,

here my answers:

1. Both monitors are 16:10 and use 1920x1200 as resolution. I don't know what was changes, but in 3.4.1. it still worked.

2. + 3. ok :)

4. I see only the "colored" tray icons of other aplications, but not the Windows ones (Vista x64). I also see no function for influencing this?

5. + 6. + 7. ok :)

One question / feature request:
Is there a possibility to enabe/disable the second monitor (or monitor X) by hotkey?

Best regards

Stefan

Ok, could you attach the Troubleshooting info from 3.5 Beta 7? Just want to check a couple of things related to the Vista volume, network, etc, tray icons not showing up.

Thanks!

Thanks Stefan!

For me, both of the previews (Windows, and DF) are the same size in Vista. However, the preview size does seem to change depending on the size/proportions of the window itself. I noticed in your screenshot, that the previews are for two different windows. Can you try changing the DisplayFusion taskbar mode to All Taskbars Show All Windows, and then compare the previews for the exact same window? Let me know if that doesn't make sense :)

As for disabling/enabling your second monitor with a HotKey, you can do this with the Monitor Profiles feature. Just save two profiles, one with the monitor enabled, and one with it disabled, and then assign a HotKey to each Profile. It requires two HotKeys, but that's definitely the best way to do it for now.

I'll check out the Troubleshooting info you posted and see if I can figure out why your built-in Vista tray icons aren't showing up :)

Thanks!

Ok, so it looks like the Vista tray icons aren't showing up in the German version (and probably other non-English versions) of Vista. We'll check it out and see what we can do.

Thanks!

Hi Keith,

I checked today with BETA 8:

# Preview Popup: looks ok now, did you change something in BETA 8?
I just noticed that the DF preview popup is not totally identical (pixel-by-pixel) to the Vista one, do you have room for improvements here or is it already as identical as possible? In this case, I can save the effort to investigate the deviations, otherwise, I could do a quick comparison for you :)

# Any update on the points #2, #4 and #5?

Best regards

Stefan

The preview popup is about as close as it's going to get for now, so no need to look into it at the moment, but thanks for the offer! :)

No news on #2, #4, or #5 yet.

Thanks!

#2 - If that's DisplayFusion on the right and Vista on the left, then I think Vista needs to be fixed. DisplayFusion looks better. :)

On the left (Vista) it looks like start button being placed into/inside the taskbar and the dark border on the left and the right side is just to make that visible. A border around the hole start button would only make sense if the entire button were lying inside the takbar which is the case if you give the taskbar a height of 2 or 3 - then the button also has a corresponding border in Vista :)

As it is highly unlikely that Vista will be fixed, I think DF should be aligned to the Vista look for convenience reasons, shouldn't it? ;-)

@Stefan: Oh yeah, we'll definitely fix it in DisplayFusion if we can, I was being a bit silly in my previous comment, sorry about that! :)

Just a quick update, DisplayFusion 3.5 Beta 11 (renamed to 4.0.0 Beta 11) is now available and fixes up the issue of the built-in Vista tray icons not showing up in the DF tray.

Thanks!

Confirmed, works fine :) But I still don't get why the popups for Network and Volume do not have this flashing issue of the Clock, one would think that they all behave the same way ^^

Any schedule for #2 and #5?

One thing I noticed under Vista:
http://www.abload.de/img/shortcuts4sjl0.jpg

In my opinion, to be consistent, there should be no space between the popup and the taskbar.

And two issues I noticed under Windows 7:
http://www.abload.de/img/soundmek18.png

The DF sound popup (right) seems to be misplaced in the current BETA, doesn't it? This does not happen under Vista, but there, the network popup seems to misplaced when the tray icons are aligned to the left:
http://www.abload.de/img/network5bjn3.jpg

http://www.abload.de/img/start6mj56.png

I think I mentioned this already some time ago: the original start button has some kind of light corona around it (left), the DF one does not. And when pointing the mouse over the button, the original start button has some kind of fluent/fading effect for the highlighting, the DF has not, it just switches the image without anomation.

The network and volume popups do behave the same way, but they seem to move much quicker than the clock. Unfortunately there's not much we can do there.

We're still hoping to fix up #2 and #5 for 4.0.

The Jump List in Vista is drawn the same as the one in Windows 7, so it uses the same location because of the shadow around the Jump List border. Do you have the Window shadows disabled in Vista?

We have an open issue regarding the positioning of the Volume tray dialog in Windows 7, and we'll hopefully have it fixed up for 4.0 :)

Regarding the Vista Network tray dialog, it seems to always open to the right of the tray icon, but because the Windows taskbar is near the edge of the screen, it gets pushed left and looks centred. See the attached screenshot of the Windows Vista taskbar when I make the clock text really long. We'll leave this one alone for now, but if it ends up being a big problem we'll certainly revisit it :)

As for the two notes about the Windows 7 Start button, we unfortunately can't fix those at the moment, but if we can in the future, we definitely will.

Thanks!

Just a quick update, we've fixed up the Vista Start button in 4.0.1 Beta 1 so that it no longer has a black outline on the top half. Still haven't had a chance to work on the other issues :)

Hi Keith,

the space issue has been fixed, right? (issue #5). I think you posted an update for this in one of my old threads...

Then the only thing left so far is the point with the Jump List in Vista. You're right, it behaves the same way like in Win 7, but if you for example compare it with the way the tray popups of Vista look like, it is not consistent:

http://www.abload.de/img/vistagicuk.jpg

You can see that although there's also the shadow in Vista to the right, the popup has no distance to the taskbar. Of course you can argue that a jump list is not a native Vista feature and therefore is free in its behaviour, that would be fine for me, I just wanted to point that "issue" out and make clear that it MIGHT be more consistent if there was no space in Vista :)

But one thing I really found a bit strange is the context menu of windows that are moved to the DF taskbar, because it also has this Win 7 style which is totally different from the context menu you get when right-clicking on a taskbar entry of the Vista taskbar:

http://www.abload.de/img/contextsc8cc.jpg

And furthermore, you can Minimize/Maximize/Resize/Move the window easily because you don't have these entries in that "special" context menu. Is this by intention of would it be possible to have to "uncool" Vista context menu also on the DF taskbar (to have it consistent through all taskbars)?

Any news on "issue" #7 (highlighting of all Start menu buttons when clicking one of them - you said there might be plans for adding it)?

Best regrds

Yep, the space issue should be fixed! (#5)

I think we'll leave the Jump List spacing the way it is for now, but you can disable the Jump Lists with the "Use Jump Lists" option on the DisplayFusion Settings > Taskbar tab if you prefer to use the default Vista right-click menu :)

As for the Start button highlighting, we're going to leave it as is for now, but we'll certainly revisit it in the future if necessary.

Thanks!

Hold down shift when right-clicking to get the standard system menu. Works for native Win7 taskbars, too.
