Does anyone else have issues where apps stay on taskbar after you close them? I close the apps and they are still on my taskbar, when I hover the mouse over them it shows the small pop-up with the window preview but it has an 'X' in the preview.

Thanks for sending that over! I'm not seeing anything unusual in the troublesehooting info. Would you be able to send over a debug log?

  • On the DisplayFusion Settings > Troubleshooting tab, change the Logging drop-down to "L1: Log Minimal" and click Apply
  • The next time this issue occurs, note the time so we'll know where to check in the log file
  • Click the "Export Info to File" button on the Settings > Troubleshooting tab
  • Reply with the file attached
  • Disable debug logging after sending the log

Should I try another troubleshooting info again before I send the debug log. When I created the troubleshoot log the icons on the taskbar weren't there. It happens maybe one or twice a day but at the time I created the log it wasn't happening

If you do the debug logging steps the next time the issue is present, it will include the troubleshooting info as well :)

I had the issue occur and as soon as I opened displayfusion the icons disappereared from the taskbar, but this is the file that was created. I closed displayfusion and opened some folders and I closed them, the issue occured where they contniued on the taskbar, so I opened displayfusion again to export the file but the icons disappereared again as soon as displayfusion started opening.

So I closed greenshot window I had opened from taking a screenhot and I noticed icon continued appearing on one of the taskbar so I opened displayfusion to try and create a log and the icon was still there so I opened file exporer on a different monitor and then closed it and the icon remained on that taskbar as well all while displayfusion was still open so I created the log and took a screenshot of the icons that were on the taskbars of two separate monitors

echo this for me, been happening for several weeks, thought it was because I had pinned apps to your taskbar, which makes a second icon when starting app. but unpinned everything today, restarted, first app I opened then closed is hung already. If it is something that I run multiple instances of then when the issue occurs I can't switch to the instance that is still running, when I click it on your taskbar nothing happens, same as clicking on a red x "closed" instance.

was becoming increasing frustrated with closed apps leaving icons on your taskbars with red x in preview. cannot close them any way I know of (since the app isn't really running). too soon to know if this is a fix or workaround but when I changed middle button behavior for icons in taskbar from opening another instance, to close the application, all the bad icons disappeared.

still good for me, I'm wondering if it is because I changed middle click to Close Application and you chose to disable it (which I take to mean you chose Do Nothing). I will add an update here tomorrow sometime whether its good or bad.

I'm still good,I can't make the problem happen. A little before I made the change described previously, I also turned Windows Taskbar On All Monitors feature back on (in Windows settings not Displayfusion), because I noticed and enabled the Displayfusion Advanced setting that disables the warning when you do that. Maybe that has something to do with it?
I have also noticed (but can't reproduce at will) that sometimes the context menu popup for apps on the displayfusion taskbar takes a couple seconds to appear, sometimes it is quick. Also sometimes the context list includes the Windows taskbar list for pinned and recently used files for the app along with the Displayfusion items, but sometimes it does not (both before and after re-enabling the Windows taskbar on all monitors feature). Does anybody else have those issues?

@Ruben: Could you send us a debug log? Last time it looks like only the troubleshooting info came through.

  • On the DisplayFusion Settings > Troubleshooting tab, change the Logging drop-down to "L1: Log Minimal" and click Apply (do this now)

Not really. Just doing the same as usual when working. I also don't really notice it right away. I might have a folder open while I'm working and then I close it and go back to work and then realize later on that the icon is still on the taskbar. I have 3 monitors and have the displayfusion taskbar on my two secondary monitors and those are the ones that it happens on

I have two monitors with DF taskbars on both, and the issue would occur identically on both (I have DF taskbars set to show all windows), and like I said I recently went back to having Windows taskbars on both as well. Maybe there is some interaction between Windows and DF taskbars that cause your issue and the other issues I mentioned, (about how sometimes DF taskbar icons stall a bit on right click, then won't show the Windows pinned/recent context menu list along with the DF options list. But sometimes the DF taskbar context menu pops up quick and has all lists). I also have odd issues with the Search icon on the Windows taskbar not opening sometimes, from either Windows taskbar, or maybe it will work from one taskbar...
What option are you using for Windows taskbars? Also for the DF setup for taskbars I have Mode 'Windows taskbar shows NO windows, DF shows ALL windows'. My use is to have all common apps, in use or not, pinned to Windows taskbars, and DF taskbars set to show all windows. This lets me start common apps easily from either monitor with the Windows taskbars, and pull any open app to a monitor (if the monitorit is open on is showing a full screen app that I don't want to interrupt).

So I had a few windows opened and when I closed them the icons stayed on the taskbar. I opened displayfusion and then the icons disappeared. I closed displayfusion and the displayfusion icon stayed on the taskbar. I opened displayfusion again and the other icon still remained, so there were two displayfusion icons. I turned on the log minimal and then opened up a microsoft edge window and closed it and that icon remained on the taskbar. This happened at 10:36pm. Attached is the log.

Thanks! We'll take a look at the log.

Also, we've got a test build of DisplayFusion 11 Beta 1 that we're not quite ready to release to everyone through the auto-updater, but thought you might like to try out as it may resolve this issue due to the overhaul of taskbar rendering and lot of old code paths being removed now that we no longer need to support Windows 7. This beta has some very big behind the scenes changes that will improve performance, speed up startup times, re-organizes the main settings window, and adds real time settings changes. We've done a lot of internal testing, but be prepared for a few bugs. We'll collect feedback over the holidays and review it all in January.

Please take a backup of your settings (Settings Options Export) before updating and store them outside of the default folder. If you need to roll back to 10.1.2, you can download it at https://www.displayfusion.com/Download/ and install it over top of the beta.

If you'd like to give it a try, you can download it here: https://www.binaryfortress.com/Data/Download/?Package=displayfusion&v11-test=1

started happening for me again, I haven't changed anythingabout my pc but there have been a few Windows updates. Since it is sporadic I don't want to turn on logging to capture info next time, since there may not be one for quite awhile, that's the annoying thing about intermittent issues.
However I found that restarting Explorer cleans everything up.

This issue has also been occuring for me for multiple weeks. I've been waiting for a Bug Fix update, but I am on Windows 10 and app version 11.0 Beta 2 and I am still encountering this issue. The only way I am able to refresh the icons that remain on the secondary (and tertiary) taskbars is to force quit and reopen the app.

I've attached my logs to this post. My computer was turned on at approximately 8:20am this morning, and now an hour later, I've encountered this problem with four seperate applications.

We were able to reproduce this issue here, and it appears to be related to having AutoCAD installed and/or running on the system. Very strange, but now that we've been able to reproduce it locally, we should hopefully be able to find a solution :)

That is confidence-inspiring! The computer in question is a work computer that is primarily used for drafting. I imagine I wouldn't be the only person who uses AutoCAD who also uses multiple displays in their setup. I'm looking forward to a fix. Thank you for your response!

no AutoCad for me, but I do use a fifteen year old full Java required epg app that behaves oddly at times. Isn't AutoCad at least partially Java still, for addons at least? (not JRE, full Java).

I also have the "Sticky Taskbar Icon" happening and I do run AutoCAD.
I also have Desktop Icons that either shift position on the desktop or jump to my second monitor, I have 4 monitors including my notebook display.

Up until a month or so ago, I was running the version 9.9 of Display Fusion on Windows 10 Pro and had neither of these issues.
I have been running Display Fusion since 2012 and I have also been running Fences for the last 4 or 5 years with no issues.
This is not saying I don't have other minor issues with Display Fusion one of which I have posted after upgrading to version 10.1.2 and saw it was still an issue.

Still happening to me on rare occasion. Dunno if this is a clue, but it may start while I have multiple instances of an app like Excel running, but also have more than one file in one of the instances open as well (I need separate instances running for some sloppy VBA code I wrote for a few files I use, they have to be separated. Then when I open a simple xls it just adds itself to one of the existing instances). This makes for an odd combination of previewing all the files on the taskbar, your app wants to show me a single Excel icon with a column of tiles for all the open files for all instances together.
Then when I close one spreadsheet file it turns into the red X and here we go again. Even before I attempt to close a file, if I open a different file type in an app like Notepad, when I close it I also get the red X problem with that app as well.
Does AutoCad open multiple modules and user files in a way similar to my issue that causes a problem too?

I always have AutoCAD open with multiple files since I need to look through different drawings at once. It is what I am always working on so I always notice the icons still showing for other applications that I have running. For these other programs I sometimes just have one instance of them or multiple. For instance I only have one instance of spotify running and then the icon still shows after I close it. It also happens for multiple instances of programs. For the most part I have one instance of file explorer running with multiple tabs so I don't notice if it happens when I close one tab because there is only one icon on the taskbar which only shows the current folder when I hover over the icon on the taskbar. I do sometimes open another instance of folder explorer so that I can place it on a different monitor. When I do this and then close that folder on the other monitor then I the icon still showing on the taskbar on that monitor. Also happens with microsoft teams after I close it and there is only one instance of teams that is running. I always have chrome running on my main monitor with autocad but sometimes open a separate chrome window to place on one of my other monitors and it happens when I close that window as well while I still have chrome on the main monitor with multiple tabs open.

Sorry, way worse for me now. My usual error is when I open an Excel instance from a file, then open another file in that instance, then open a new instance for a different file (as I mentioned previously I have to use different instances for some files because of some sloppy vba code addressing I wrote).
When I do that now, then close the second file of the first instance, I get the red x for the icon for the first file and cannot access that file anymore even though it is still running (in Task Manager). With this new version, once I get the red x icon DisplayFusion freezes up (all of it, the taskbars, titlebar buttons, settings access) and I have to close it from Task Manager. Also, now I no longer get titlebar buttons in my dvr tuner video windows so it is more difficult to shift them to a different monitor (taskbar option to move them to current monitor does work). Well I thought a restart fixed the titlebar button on my tuner sw video window, but it seems intermittent. sometimes when I launch the dvr app I get a titlebar button, sometimes not.

was your hope that the issue was resolved based on code changes for how the taskbars function, or something about the upgrade to .NET 8 ? Does .NET affect your app with video windows?

@John: We made some taskbar code changes to resolve this issue. I can't reproduce it using your steps with Excel, any chance you could capture a video showing the issue?

Well now I cannot reproduce the Excel issue, or the other common version where I have multiple Explorer windows open and copy a file from one to the other. In the past when I did that and closed one window long after the copy would be done, I got the red x and a file copy progress window that was hung at a certain percentage. But that issue gone now too.
These issues were always intermittent, I will reply if they happen again, thanks for your quick reply!
Also the titlebar button issue seems related to the window size. On this Dell Precision M4800 laptop with the nVidia Quadro 2100M graphics card there has always been an issue when using two HDMI connected displays (internal display "disconnected"). One display's range overlaps into the other display by a few pixels. This wasn't a problem for your app before, but now the titlebar buttons dissappear if the video window is sized to "full" because that makes it intrude on the other display a few pixels, which turns off your titlebar buttons now. If I manually drag the window size to its own display your buttons reappear. Maybe there isnt even an issue because the Move To Next Display is the only title button I use, so probably it should dissapear if the window is encroaching on the other display.

The red x hung taskbar thing seems to be good now. The titlebar issue only happens on:
1)SichboPVR4
2) a very old EPG guide app called TVG (https://tvguide.sourceforge.net/index.shtml, NOT the jre app mentioned previously) that has not been updated since 2007 and I have tinkered with several compatability settings for
3) The native Microsoft Media Player app I think I got from the Microsoft store or was automatically installed. You could easily try that one on your test bed.
My comment about how a maximized window encroaches on the other monitor isn't visible for every app, and the pvr app is probably going full screen mode, not a maximized window. The media player app is definitely a maximized window that does not encroach on the other display and has the titlebar button issue.

Ok, could you create a new discussions topic for the titlebar button thing, and include a debug log?

  • On the DisplayFusion Settings > Troubleshooting tab, change the Logging drop-down to "L1: Log Minimal" and click Apply
  • Reproduce the issue and note the time so we'll know where to check in the log file
  • Click the "Export Info to File" button on the Settings > Troubleshooting tab
