Whether DF plans to expand in the direction of virtual desktops or not, it would be a good idea to integrate better with the leading virtual desktop products. Dexpot and VituaWin are two obvious examples. But having used both I have switched to BetterDesktop Tool because it is already very good and looks like it could become great.

So, I want to put in a vote for integrating with BetterDesktop Tool.

The products work fairly well together already. One issue is getting the DF taskbars to work on all virtual desktops (same issue in Dexpot and VituaWin). I have switched off the DF taskbar function and am happier with DF+BDT without that function than I would be with either DF or BDT alone. I mention this because it is not possible to integrate every function of DF with every function of other products. But some developer to developer conversations could result in working out what functions can be integrated and then communicate the "limitations" to the users of both products. Some users will want everything; but most users will be happy to get most functions if they are confident that the products will work together and be tested together in future releases.

[BetterDesktop Tool is mentioned in some other threads on virtual desktops. But I started this new discussion because it is buried in the previous ones - for example, giving zero results if searched. Here's hoping this new discussion will revitalize the debate on virtual desktop integration in DF - because this is the area where there could be the biggest increase in DF's value.]

Thanks for a great product and great support.

Thanks for the feedback, Keith! I'll certainly check out BetterDesktop, and we'll see if we can get in touch with their devs to work together on supporting each others' products.

Thanks!

Looks like you can add DF as a global application in BetterDesktopTool by doing the following:
  • Open the "Window Overview" on virtual desktop #1
  • Right-click the DisplayFusion taskbar and choose "Make all instances of DisplayFusion.exe global"

I'll also email their support team to ask if they can add us as a global application exception by default :)

Thanks!

Thanks. That seems to be working. The only problem is the solution was too simple. Makes me feel like an idiot to have not tried that! In my defense, I guess I thought the DF toolbar was a special object - like the Win toolbar - so I never thought of treating it like a regular window.

Thanks again. Loving DF - even with multi-monitor taskbars turned off. Going to love it even more now I know how to get multi-monitor taskbars to work with BetterDesktop Tool.

The only thing I love more than your product is your support!

No worries at all, glad I could help, and glad to hear you like DisplayFusion (and our support team)!

Just a quick update, I heard back from the folks at BetterDesktopTool, and they're going to look into this and fix it up for a future version :)

Just got a new version of BetterDesktop Tool. One of the updates is "Added support for DisplayFusion". Great news. Except, at the moment I can't see any differences. Do you know what it might be?

I'm not sure, to be honest. We weren't working on anything with the BetterDesktopTool devs, so best to check with them to find out what's changed :)

EDIT: I'm guessing that they may have just added the rule that I mentioned in post #3 by default. If you already had it manually added, that'd likely be why you didn't notice any change :)
