this has been going on for me throughout the whole 7+ line of updates, it's such a big thing that I figured it was going to keep getting fixed in the next update, but now I'm thinking it's just me :(

anyhow, the gadgets that close, minimize and maximize are all mixed up, you try to close the window and it minimizes, you try to minimize it maximizes and restores.... it's absolutely crazy and a HUGE pain :( it doesn't always do this, but when it does all I have to do it quit displayfusion and load it back up again, then it will work properly again for some time.

thanks

In the "Settings" window for DF are you going to "Functions" and at the bottom re-arranging your icons via "Drag the TitleBar Buttons to re-order them" ? Or, are you doing all of that then the app just forgets their positions until you "re-load" as you put it?

@Michelle: Are you referring to the native Windows caption buttons? Or the DF TitleBar Buttons?

sorry for posting and disappearing, some unexpected things recently for me...

yes to keith, the native windows title bar buttons. Close, Maximize and Minimize. I actually don't use any additional title bar buttons, just the stock windows buttons.

the only thing that I could imagine that might be unusual on my system would be the fact I have a lot of monitors...? 5 of them. other than that DF has always been awesome for me.

No worries Michelle! When this issue crops up, can you add the GDI Objects, User Objects, and Threads columns to the Windows Task Manager, and tell me what the values are for each of those columns for explorer.exe and DisplayFusion.exe?
Nov 18, 2015  • #5
Michelle Ellis' profile on WallpaperFusion.com
oki doke, here we go...

total values for explorer.exe - 647

Threads - 28
GDI Object - 385
User Objects - 234

total values for displayfusion.exe - 439

Threads - 29
GDI Object - 128
User Objects - 282

Thanks! Those numbers all look ok. Could you attach a copy of your troubleshooting info the next time this occurs? (copy it while the issue is present)
  • Open the Settings > Troubleshooting tab
  • Click the "Copy to Clipboard" button
  • Paste the text into a text file (please don't paste the text directly into your reply, the formatting gets garbled and makes it difficult to parse)
  • Reply with the file attached

Here's some more stuff, I just discovered... ok, so I have 5 monitors, an eyefinity group (three monitors) and two other monitors which are extended desktops. well, this ONLY happens on the eyefinity display. I can take the same window that's not closing or minimizing properly and move it off the eyefinity display and it works perfectly.

ugh... I just turned off splits and padding.... I think I found the culprit :| I'll report back if this proves to be untrue, but so far sure looks that way.

Ok, thanks! Could you try updating to 8.0 Beta 1 (https://www.displayfusion.com/Download/Beta) and the re-enable splits to see if that makes any difference?
Dec 14, 2015  • #11
Michelle Ellis' profile on WallpaperFusion.com
you bet! ...unfortunately made no difference

I wonder if I should I go back to the previous version...?

I'd like to see if we can fix it up in the current version if you don't mind doing some more troubleshooting?

Could you try splitting one of the non-Eyefinity monitors to see if the same thing happens there?
Dec 15, 2015  • #13
Michelle Ellis' profile on WallpaperFusion.com
sure :) happy to help out however

ok, I split the other desktops and yeah, it's happen on those too now.

Ok, in Control Panel > System > Advanced > Performance, if you disable the "Animate windows when minimizing and maximizing" option, does that make any difference?
Dec 16, 2015  • #15

no, sorry... that didn't do anything either

Would you be able to attach a screenshot of what it looks like when they get messed up?
Dec 18, 2015  • #17
Michelle Ellis' profile on WallpaperFusion.com
maybe I should clarify that by the gadgets getting messed up I mean that their appearance is still in order, and laid out in the proper positions, it's just that when you click the minimize gadget it will either maximize the window or restore it from a maximized state (instead of actually minimizing it of course). both the maximize and minimize gadget then have the exact same behavior. I've been working around this problem by using the taskbar to minimize and restore.

SO I can definitely send a screenshot, but it won't show anything out of the ordinary...

Keith Lammers (BFS)'s profile on WallpaperFusion.com
Ah ok, could you attach a screenshot still? I'm just wondering if there's a chance I might spot something I haven't thought of already.

Also, when you hover your mouse over the buttons, do they highlight correctly?
Dec 22, 2015  • #19
Michelle Ellis' profile on WallpaperFusion.com
you bet! here you go

and yes the buttons highlight properly, but one weird thing, when you click them an outline of the button stays on the screen for some seconds then disappears, that ONLY happens once the problem has occured. you don't see that when it's working correctly.

Thanks! I'm so stumped on this, I don't even know where to go from here. Do the AMD drivers have any features that are supposed to provide window management functionality? Just wondering if DisplayFusion may be conflicting with something there?

Hi Keith, not that I'm aware of, I just looked thru the control panel and didn't see anything either :( wish I could provide a clue here...

I'd like to go back to the last of the version 6 releases if I could? it was the last DF worked well for me... and I didn't make backups of the installers... is there somewhere I could download this?

thanks

ugh... I'm thinking now it was one of the first of the 7.x versions that last worked properly :( sorry for that, is there a place I can just choose which version to download? hate to keep wasting your time... I just know that there was a recent version that had the new splits window in monitor configuration where everything was working for me.

sry, I've been really busy (maybe distracted) in real life lately.... I finally found the time tonite to grab these and test stuff out, but... the download links aren't working. lol I apparently have the magic touch.

Finally got back to this today and I found it! I'm running 7.0c and it functions perfectly.

I wish I had kept better track! I will install it and make sure of that before saying for sure, but yes, I think so :)

so much for memory :D

ok, I tested them all, the first version to have this issue is 7.3.1 (it goes right from 7.2 to 7.3.1 (there's no 7.3?))

I went back and reinstalled 7.2 then, and it's working fine. reproducing this (at least on my computer) is totally predictable, after the first minimize it all goes wrong - it never takes 2 minimizes (for example) and it always minimizes properly the first time. AND (I think I said this before, but) it's never normal system explorer windows. it's always programs that run in windows like photoshop, acrobat, firefox, etc...

ok, that's all I can think of. and btw, if you would like to ask or have me test something I'm more than happy! if you send me email I'm sure to get it, I don't normally visit here... tho it isa really neat place :P

Sounds good Michelle, we'll check for any changes between 7.2 and 7.3.1 that might have caused this.

Posted too soon! I think Compatibility settings are working for me now :D I'll keep testing stuff and post back.

Hey Keith, I'm guessing no, but has there been any progress on this?

I keep checking updates and seeing the same behavior :(

I've noticed something today, the close gadget isn't lining up... if I click to the right side of the close gadget (completely off the button itself) it works! but if I click right on top of it or slightly to the left, it maximizes. it's like graphics aren't lining up with the active click area.

Thanks

Unfortunately we haven't made any progress on this yet, no. Which Compatibility settings are working for you now?
Jan 23, 2017  • #38
Michelle Ellis' profile on WallpaperFusion.com
it's the 'Disable Titlebar Buttons' setting. I tried this in the past but it never did anything.
Jan 23, 2017  • #39
Keith Lammers (BFS)'s profile on WallpaperFusion.com
Interesting! Did you have to disable them for all applications?
Jan 24, 2017  • #40
Michelle Ellis' profile on WallpaperFusion.com
oops, sorry oabout that :) I used the 'This application only' setting.

...and of course, it's not all applications, only some of them do this. regular windows don't do it, only if it's a program. and it doesn't seem to have anything to do with the age of it, or if it uses it's own skin design or if it's using the windows gui.

Do you have an application called WindowBlinds installed?
Jan 31, 2017  • #42

skin was probly a bad choice of words, some programs have their own gui that doesn't look like a standard 'windows' window... MusicBee for example.

I used to run windowblinds.. actually paid for it at one point (oops didn't really want to admit that publicly lol)

not anymore... I uninstalled it trying to fix this problem actually, but it never made a difference :( ....and when I went to re-install it I couldn't, as my license had expired, and stardock won't let you download old versions of their software... nice guys over there.

anyhow, yeah, I'm done with that.

Ok, thanks! Just wanted to check, because I ran into a very similar issue with another customer who was using DF Monitor Splitting and WindowBlinds, and I noticed in an older copy of your troubleshooting info in this thread that you had WindowBlinds installed.

I'm glad to hear that the Compatibility rules are working for you for now. And if we can fix that other issue I mentioned above, perhaps it will be a general fix that will resolve your issue as well :)
