Hi, I'm runnig the free version of Display Fusion 7.1 for Setting Dual Monitor wallpaper on a Windows 7 Pro x64 Desktop.

However currently, when i go into the 'Desktop Wallpaper' settings and choose a Wallpaper, Either to Span both screens or a single image on each screen, i click apply, but then the desktop image is not displayed? Currently my desktop is just a solid colour (Black).

I have checked the 'ease of access' settings in Windows to ensure the option to remove wallpaper is not enabled and there are no group policy's in place affecting this.

I have atatched a log file from this morning if this helps?

If anyone has any suggestions that would be great.

Thanks

The log indicates that the Windows API is returning an error when we try to set the wallpaper. Are you able to set the wallpaper with the normal Windows settings instead of DisplayFusion? If not, could you try the steps in solutions 2, 4, and 5 at the article below?

Hi Keith,

Thanks for the Reply. I have folowed Steps 2, 4 and 5 as requested, however the issue still persists.

When i tried to set the wallpaper via the display settings in Windows, this also does not work.

As advised in Step 3, I treid uninstalling display fusion as a test, however this also did not resolve the problem.

However after uninstalling (and a re-boot), i checked the registry key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop and the 'Wallpaper' and 'WallpaperDF' keys were both still set to:

C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\DisplayFusion\Wallpaper_1

I have now re-installed Display Fusion, Hower still i'm unable to set a desktop wallpaper.

Please let me know if you have any further ideas?

Many Thanks

Ok, strange! If you change the Wallpaper value to point to a different file on your system, then reboot (or even just logout/login), does the wallpaper then show up?

Hi Keith,

I changed the value in the 'Wallpaper' key to point to a local jpeg file on my C:\ and then re-booted. However still the wallpaper does not display.... I Just get a plain black background.

I have followed through all the possible solutions on the Microsoft KB and it's still not working... So i'm at a loss.

I'm just a bit concered that after uninstalling Display Fusion that there were still references to it in the registry, so not sure if this was having an impact on the problem?

If you have any further suggestions that would be great?

Many Thanks

Yeah, it shouldn't have an impact on the problem, just wanted to double-check.

Did this issue only occur after installing DisplayFusion recently, or have you had DisplayFusion installed for a while now and then this just started happening? It's definitely a Windows issue, but I'm just trying to figure out if DisplayFusion could be triggering it some how. My guess is not, since we just use standard Windows APIs to set the wallpaper, but I've been wrong before ;)

I've had Display Fusion running for a while now with no issues and have updated it when new updates have been released.

I thought i could try and run a system restore back to a point it was working, however i tried restoring to my earlisest resotre point which was only a couple of weeks ago and this did not resolve the isssue either.

I'm sure it will turn out to be something simple! But it's evading me at the moment......

Could you check a couple of things for me?
  • Check the %AppData%\Microsoft\Windows\Themes folder to see if there's a file called "TranscodedWallpaper.jpg," if there is, is it 0 bytes?

Send me your troubleshooting info (steps below)
  • Open the DisplayFusion Settings > Troubleshooting tab
  • Click the Copy to Clipboard button
  • Open Notepad, paste the text, and save the file
  • Reply with the text file attached

Could you also check the following registry locations to see if there's a value called "Wallpaper?"
  • HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Control Panel\Desktop
  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Control Panel\Desktop

Thanks!

Hi Keith,

I checked the TranscodedWallpaper.jpg file which was 443KB (Screen Print Attached).

I've Attached the Display Fusion Troubleshooting Log as requested.

Yesterday I Installed DF 7.2.0 (Beta 3) to see if that would kick it back into life... But it didn't.

Finally i checked the two registry keys you suggested, however 'Control Panel' didn't exist under Policies in HKCU or HKLM.

When i checked again the Wallpaper settings in: HKCU_Control Panel_Desktop this is what i see:

Wallpaper: C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\DisplayFusion\Wallpaper_2
WallpaperDF: C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\DisplayFusion\Wallpaper_2

Is it correct that they are pointing to a file that has no extension?

Many Thanks

That is correct. It's a thing we do to trick Windows 7 into not compressing the image when it applies it.

I gave you the wrong registry locations earlier. Could you check these instead?
  • HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Control Panel\Desktop
  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Control Panel\Desktop

Hi Keith,

I've checked both locations and attached the results.

As you can see, the HKLM desktop location does have a 'Wallpaper' key but with no value?

Could this be what's causing the issue?

Thanks

So..... I went ahead and deleted the 'Wallpaper' Key and now it's all working again!!! :)

How would that key have got there, via a group policy??

Thanks so much for your help.

Not a clue. I had another customer with the same issue, and he wasn't on a domain either, so my guess is that either Windows is setting it for some reason (unlikely), or some other application is setting it. Unfortunately there's no way to figure out what set it unless you're monitoring the registry with something like Process Monitor at the time that it gets set :(

Glad to hear that worked though!

I have had the same issue for over a year! I would spend an hour every once in while trying to find/figure out a solution. I have tried every suggestion I could find on search results from google, bing, duckduckgo, even used yahoo search! :P

Removing the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Control Panel\Desktop 'Wallpaper' key fixed it! Sure would be nice to know what program created the key in the first place but I don't want to spend anymore time than I already have.

Thanks very much for this!
