Hey All,

Over the past couple of say weeks I have been getting black screens then following that pc freezes. Now I thought it was my graphics card but I tried a different one and the exact same problem happened.

When I look in the event viewer I am getting the following Service Control Error:

The DisplayFusionService service failed to start due to the following error:
The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion.

Could this be causing it? If you need anymore info please let me know.

Thanks,
Andrew.

That service doesn't really do anything in Windows 7 at the moment. It's only used for the Boot to Desktop option in Windows 8. If you like you can try disabling it in the Windows Services console, but it's not likely causing the issue you described.

My best guess would be a power supply issue, but it's hard to say from here :)

Please let me know if you have any other questions at all.

Thanks!

Upto yesterday I was receiving around 2-3 "blackouts" a day. I uninstalled Display Fusion just after I posted this and I havnt received anything as yet. Now im not saying its Display Fusion as I love the program but I will report again 24 hours from this post to see if the problem arises again bear in mind I have run 4 Eve-Online clients since then on triple monitor setup.

Ok, that's really strange! Please let me know how it works out, and we'll go from there.

Thanks!

Hey,

Just thought I would let you know that Display Fusion is still uninstalled and still have received no problem so far.

Regards,
Andrew.

Ok, interesting! Would you be able to install it again, and then do the following?
  • Enable debug logging on the Troubleshooting tab (set it to Logging: Important Only) and click Apply
  • Restart DisplayFusion
  • The next time the issue occurs, note the time
  • Attach the %appdata%\DisplayFusion\DisplayFusion.log file to this topic (can be found by clicking the 'Open Log' button on the Troubleshooting tab)
  • Please also attach a copy of the info from the Settings > Troubleshooting tab
  • Disable debug logging after sending me the log

Thanks!

Spoke to flippin soon came home today from a trip out all day and pc had crashed I checked the event viewer and two errors were received this time:-

The Windows Search service failed to start due to the following error:
The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion.

The DisplayFusionService service failed to start due to the following error:
The system cannot find the file specified.

I dont understand the last one though due to Display Fusion being uninstalled.

Any ideas?

P.S. I dont think it would be a power issue though as I have a 750W OCS Power Supply and a Radeon HD 5770

Cheers.
Andrew.

Ok it just crashed again this time not 3 hours later so I went all out on the event viewer aswell as drivers and even went and looked for anything to do with Display Fusion as that is the only thing that is coming up with an error everytime it crashes. The service that is crashing is actually still alive even after uninstalling DF. It is set to automatic. So this time I have disabled it int he hopes that it does the trick. If you can wait I will give you a report within 3 days if it crashes or if it is fine. I will not turn the pc off for three days.

Ah, it looks like the uninstaller doesn't fully remove the service from the Windows registry (though the exe is gone, which is what generated your error). We'll fix that up, but that definitely wouldn't be causing your crash, as it's not actually running anything.

I'm stumped on that one, it sounds like a hardware issue, since it's seemingly random. It could be anything from an issue with the hard drive, to bad memory, to overheating, or anything else. It's really hard to say. Sorry I can't be of more help!
