Running DisplayFusion as a user with limited rights causes 2 UAC prompts that require input:
1. Displayfusion.exe
2. Displayfusionapphook.exe

This has been occuring for several versions now. Currently I'm running v4.3
Context Menus are off, as are Logon changes.

Could you backup the DisplayFusion Settings (use the button on the Options tab), and attach them here, along with a copy of the info from the Troubleshooting tab?

Thanks!

Thanks! I wasn't able to reproduce the issue using your settings backup. Could you right-click your desktop and see if the DisplayFusion context menu entries are there? If so, it's likely that although the DisplayFusion UI is showing that they're disabled, they are not getting removed until after you confirm the UAC prompts.

DF 5.0 and 5.0.1 both did not cause the UAC prompts and I was happy!
Upgraded to v5.1 today and the dreaded double prompts are back :(

The files being loaded are:
DisplayFusionHookAppWIN6032
DisplayFusionHookAppWIN6064

Which makes sense, since I'm running a 64bit OS.
I've attached my settings backup as requested last time, in case that leads us anywhere.

I've confirmed that there are no context menu entries and logon changes are not activated.

Strange! Do you get the UAC prompts when DisplayFusion starts up? Or only when applying the settings?

The prompts appear only when starting the software (both during windows startup or via the start menu shortcut).

Once the application is loaded, settings can be saved without additional prompts.
I even tried unchecking the hotkeys and titlebar buttons, but alas it didn't change the prompts on startup.

Ok, interesting! You mentioned that you're running Windows 64-bit. Is it Vista, 7, or 8?

Edit: Scratch that, I just checked your troubleshooting info, and noticed you're running Windows 7 :)

What do you have your UAC level set at in the Windows settings?

UAC prompts are all the way up, but lowering them doesn't appear to affect the prompts.
The prompts are being generated by a third party tool that is managing admin rights.

What I've found is that if I launch DisplayFusion.exe "As Administrator" I'll get only 1 UAC prompt and both hook's are allowed to load without additional prompts. If I launch DisplayFusion.exe as a normal user, I'll get the third party prompts on both hook exe's.

Are there calls the hooks are making that would require admin rights at some point?

Ok interesting! What's the name of that application that you use to manage admin rights? I'd like to try it out here to see if I can reproduce the issue, as I haven't been able to yet, even with UAC at the highest setting.

The hooks need UI Access so that they can interact with elevated windows, like regedit and Task Manager, so they definitely need more elevated privileges than normal.

Hey Keith,

Looks like I found a workaround for now.
Avecto must be uninstalled and the system rebooted. Once that has happened, DisplayFusion can be installed. I rebooted again, just for good measure. Then Avecto was re-installed and DisplayFusion now starts up fine without any prompts for admin rights.

Interesting! That's great to know! I haven't had a chance to test out Avecto here yet, but I will still test it and try to contact their support team to see if there's anything that can be done to avoid this issue in the future.

Thanks for posting the workaround!

Keith,

Hi, I have recently installed DisplayFusion on a Windows 7 64bit machine which has Avecto Privilege Guard installed.

I have noticed some bizarre behaviour as follows:

  • If I start display fusion with windows I have to enter my username and password 2 times in the Privilege Guard popup
  • If I don't start DF with Windows, but start it by running "DisplayFusion Setting" from the start menu I only have to enter my password once
  • Also when starting DF with windows, any application that is launched with elevated privileges via the PG popup does not work with DF, e.g. Ctrl+Win+X does not move to next monitor.
  • However if I launch DF by running the settings exe apps running with elevated permissions do work with DF

I'm trying to get a trial of Avecto PG so that I can do some testing with it here. Sounds like it messes with the integrity levels of other apps, which can definitely cause DisplayFusion to not be able to manage them.
