(note that I'm one of the people having performance problems with Resource Monitor + DisplayFusion open in the other thread)

Another area I'm noticing very bad performance is in Windows Explorer (whether I have Resource Monitor open or not). Just resizing an Explorer window is MUCH choppier when DisplayFusion is open and the choppiness goes away as soon as I close DisplayFusion. Navigating through folders in Explorer is also slow.

Strangely, when DisplayFusion is open, when opening a folder my mouse cursor turns into a mouse+spinner very briefly before the folder opens. Again, closing DisplayFusion fixes this.

I'm using the latest DisplayFusion and Windows 10 (1809).

A video demonstrating the problem: https://files.terriblefish.com/2019-02-12_02-24-28.mp4

Again, all of these same operations are fast as soon as I close DisplayFusion.

Note that I'm only interested in DisplayFusion for exactly one thing: monitor splitting and having a separate taskbar on each split.

If there are integrations I can disable that would make DisplayFusion hook into my system less (which is presumably one of the problems behind the Explorer slowness) please let me know how.

Thanks!

Could you attach a backup of your DisplayFusion Settings? (Settings > Options > Export)

Thanks!

Thanks! I don't see anything out of the ordinary in your settings, and when I restore them here everything works fine.

Could you send me a debug log?

  • On the DisplayFusion Settings > Troubleshooting tab, change the Logging drop-down to "L1: Log Minimal" and click Apply
  • Drag/resize Explorer to reproduce the issue and note the time so we'll know where to check in the log file
  • Click the "Export Info to File" button on the Settings > Troubleshooting tab
  • Reply with the file attached
  • Disable debug logging after sending the log

Thanks!

Attached. 3:53AM PST.

I resized the window, created a couple of folders, moved one folder into the other, navigated through the folders. All slow as per my video.

I played around with this some more and the largest UI stalls are when I resize the window and it crosses monitor split. The taskbar icon moving from one taskbar to another freezes the UI for a long time. This is MUCH slower than just dragging the window around which doesn't freeze the UI at all (I have window snapping off, dragging windows was very slow when it was on).

This is only a partial root cause. It's still slow when NOT crossing the monitor split, and also this isn't causing the slowdown when navigating folders or creating folders.

Thanks! I don't see anything out of the ordinary in the log unfortunately :(

If you disable the monitor splits, does this still happen?

My trial ran out so I'm just going to bail. To get performance to even be workable required way too much tweaking and at this point I'd rather sacrifice the usability of DF for good performance with a competitor. I'm using a competitor that ONLY splits the screens and doesn't have all the other functionality like per-split taskbars.

I *really* miss the multiple taskbars but *shrug*. :(

Thanks again!

Ok, sorry to hear that it didn't work out! If you end up trying DisplayFusion again in the future and still run into these issues, please let me know and we can try to continue troubleshooting.

Thanks!

BTW, +1 on this. Windows Explorer isn't the only thing affected - just general window switching is much slower. I just purchased a license too, but I'm having regrets and am going to start looking at competitors.

Thanks Eric! Does this seem to happen right after starting DisplayFusion, or only after it's been running for a while?

It happens soon after it loads.

Ok, and if you leave it running long enough, does DisplayFusion eventually crash?

I have never seen it actually crash. I just had to close it again however. After rebooting yesterday and seeing my system become responsive again, it has once again deteriorated forcing me to close DF - and now everything works smoothly. I have a very powerful system here so it's frustrating to see this happen. It seems to affect performance in every single app. I love DF's features and hope there's a way to resolve this.

FYI, here's another set of logs, this time set to max after a fresh boot into Windows. Performance eventually degraded until I had to close DF again.

I actually just briefly tried it the other day. Have since uninstalled, but performance issues predate that.

Can you check to see if the VDM Windows service is still there and running? The DF troubleshooting info is showing that the VDM DLL is still injected in DisplayFusion.exe, so I'm wondering if that might be contributing to the issues you're having.

BTW, I'm using a 49" ultrawide monitor - that's not bad data in the logs :)

FWIW I have two ultrawide monitors. I wonder if performance degrades as a factor of screen real estate?

It shouldn't, I've got 2 4K monitors + a 1080p monitor here without issues. If you disable application hooks (Settings > Advanced Settings > Disable Application Hooks) and restart DisplayFusion, does that make any difference?

Hi Keith, I believe I'm having the same performance issue here. I've been seeing this for months, just didn't have the time to figure out the cause until now. If I close DF, everything is fine. As soon as DF is running, I will have sporadic performance issues when it comes to explorer. The easiest way for me to duplicate this is simply to hover over the taskbar and observe the previews. The main taskbar always works fine. But about half the time, the DF extended taskbar items will show a very delayed preview, if at all. Clicks, etc, are also very delayed on the extended monitors when this is happening.

Also, I tried disabling application hooks, but still observed performance issues.

I've attached a debug log.

I've noticed the same issue for several months at least. From what I can tell the biggest hitches seem to occur whenever Focus changes in Windows. There will be a brief period of time, perhaps less than a second or up to several seconds where performance is absolutely awful in the newly selected program and then things will return to normal.

There also does seem to be consitently poor performance in Explorer windows regardless of Focus change events, it's possible these are two separate issues.

EDIT: I'm wondering if by downloading old versions I might be able to track down the release that introduced these bugs, as I'm fairly sure they weren't present when I first started using DF...

EDIT 2: It seems that by changing the Aero Color Settings to Don't change has fixed both of the issues for me. Does anyone else get that result?

I'm running into these same options. 3 monitors, when it's loading it just lags, always when displayfusion is open.
