Does anyone using latest 10.0 Beta 23 and Win 10 have problem with explorer.exe getting stack overflow after some time? It starts with missing tray icons, display errors, until in the end explorer.exe crashes with stack overflow.

When I turned DisplayFusion off and kept using my system - no problems. I'm not 100% sure if DF is a source of the problem but this stack overflow started to occur (I had it at least 3 times) after I installed Beta 23. Unfortunately around the same time I had Nvidia drivers update too so that's why I'm not that sure if DF is a problematic thing here.

There was a handle leak on some machines with Beta 23. We've just released Beta 24 and that should be all fixed up. Could you give it a try and let us know how it works out?

Thanks!

Unfortunately it's not fixed in Beta 24.
I've started my PC at 08:00 on Saturday and explorer.exe started to show up problems 10 hours later (maybe earlier). In the mean time I've played some Diablo IV, did some typical stuff. Then I left PC on for couple of hours and when I came back around 18:00 explorer was broken (missing menu entries, taskbar and tray icons - see screenshot). I've disabled autorun in DF, restarted PC and left it running. It's Sunday 11:00 and no problems so far.

Ok, thanks for letting me know! Could you grab some additional info for me the next time this happens?

  • Open the Windows Task Manager
  • On the Details tab, right-click the column header and choose "Select columns"
  • Enable these columns: Handles, Threads, User Objects, GDI Objects
  • The next time this happens, send me a screenshot of those stats, along with the CPU and memory usage stats for DisplayFusion.exe and also for explorer.exe

If you could send a copy of your DisplayFusion troubleshooting info as well, that would be great.

  • Open the Settings > Troubleshooting tab
  • Click the "Export Info to File" button
  • Reply with the file attached

Thanks!

This time it took much less time to reach GDI objects limit for explorer.exe. I guess that's the culprit. As I've said - no problem with Beta 22 and previous versions.

Wow, yeah, that's a strange one! We had been seeing handle leaks in explorer.exe that are turning out to not be caused by DF (they still leak even when it's closed), but not object leaks.

If you disable the DisplayFusion Multi-Monitor Taskbars, does explorer.exe still leak GDI Objects?

I had it and have it disabled as in DebugInfo.html attached to this thread.

Code

Toggle Multi-Monitor Taskbar: , , Jump List: False, Description: Toggle Multi-Monitor Taskbar

Edit: I'm going to check Beta 25 as I see it has been released.

After installing Beta 25 explorer.exe is keeping GDI objects on a decent level (429 at the moment) after running for whole evening and the night. It looks like this leak has been fixed. Thanks, Keith!
