I'm very interested in receiving any feedback regarding Beta 20 and games. Beta 20 should close any taskbars, stop all background operations (taskbar polling, wallpaper changing... etc) and free as much memory as it can spare when it sees a game launching. If anyone has any thoughts/observations/comments on this (good or bad) I would love to hear it. With the final release getting so close (tentatively scheduled for this Friday, Feb 20) I am trying to make sure all the bases are covered.

Thanks! :)

Beta 21 has just been released and it has a couple of important game-related improvements. Reduced memory usage, mouse-hook unloading and taskbar threading improvements should help game compatibility all-around. You can find out more here:

I am not sure what you mean by closing taskbars... I have my setup running right now and the second monitor still has the taskbar on it.
This could be simply because I have a very unique setup in which DF sould just be off, as my laptop is hooked into an arcade cabinet right now.... I wouldn't think it would cause that to change like that though. Another point is that ITG2, the game that is running in the arcade cab, does not use a mouse.... I still believe this to be a major cause of any game differences with DF...

FWIW:

Using Irfanview in full screen mode to view pictures was making the toolbar disappear - until I got a dialog popup when I reach the end of the folder, asking me if I want to navigate to another folder or not.

Same behavior verified in Build 21....

Whats FWIW?

FWIW: For What It's Worth.

DisplayFusion just detects any "fullscreen" application (which could be a game, or a picture slideshow in this case) and disposes of the taskbars. Unfortunately I can't distinguish between a game and anything else, I can only tell if an application is trying to take over the screen. Was it annoying having the taskbars disappear in this case, or not so bad?

It didn't disappear at all actually...... I am doing some more testing right now actually....

Another thing, and I may make a topic about it, DF is rather laggy with the next random feature.. Maybe its just the time it takes for that new bmp file to be made... BTW, where is that full image located? I used to know but i can't find it anymore....

just tested with StarCraft.. The second monitors taskbar went away, however the images still changed. I am going to keep testing but I will edit and live feed this post till I go to sleep.

Uhh bad news. DF actually causes SC to lag.. ALOT. Not sure why, but it is DF. It may be the wallpaper rotater, I will test that in a second.
Ok changed my settings so that they wont change.. and now the taskbar won't go away when I play. Still major lag.
Changed it back but the taskbar still stays, however another game, In The Groove, it works as expected, with no lag.

Im going to go to sleep, but I am going to test this a lot more tomorrow.

Are you playing Starcarft fullscreen or in a window? What type of lag are you experiencing? Is it when you are clicking on things, or does the game just run slowly overall?

Fullscreen, running SC in a window needs some hacking and introduces its own issues.

The lag was constant. no matter what I did, every menu lagged, the game lagged.... It wasn't good. I remember playing before, with the image rotater still active, but it only lagged when the BG changed. That is IIRC..... I'll do more testing later... I am in class right now... Heh, college is fun.

That would be great if you could do some more "testing" later. (Really, just an excuse to play games. :)) I would be interested to see if running with/without DisplayFusion shows a noticeable difference.

It does. All the lag goes away when I turn DF off.

Never said I wouldn't give more info on what I did last night/ this morning...

EDIT: Though I am in class I ran SC with no add. monitor and DF running and there was no lag, at least through the menus, I didn't risk actually playing, but last night the lag was even in the menus.

Ok, thanks for the follow-up. I've made some nice changes to the mouse hook code that will remove some of the lag. I'll be posting Beta 22 tonight - I'm interested to see if it will take care of this issue.

I'll be able to spend some time this weekend playing games, and since I have a pair of GTX260s I can try running something as elaborate as The Witcher or Mass Effect without SLI and see how DF plays with them...

I honestly am in the habit of killing most of my trayed apps in order to give max performance to my games when playing, and DF is one of those that gets the proverbial sacrificial knife every time, even with 4 GB of RAM installed - force of habit, I guess, seeing as this is the first time I can say I have had this much graphics power in one machine available to me. However, in the interest of testing, I will start *really* playing (no pun intended) with DF beyond what I have normally been trying to see how well it works here in W7 and if I can possibly break it or not.

Beta 22 has just been posted. If everything goes well over the next couple of days (and you have a chance to test this) then I may release the final build on Sunday. :)

C:\Documents and Settings\{your login}\Application Data\Binary Fortress Software\DisplayFusion\CustomWallpaper.bmp

It's 9+meg (!). XP only uses the outdated .BMP format for wallpaper. Windows 7 now uses .jpg (and maybe .png) which I believe Jon is looking into.

MS "Windows" developers seem to be quite behind the times when it comes to things like this and dual monitor issues. In the Windows 7 beta forums, they act like they never heard of dual monitors. Unbelievable. The company where I work (300+ people) everyone has dual monitors...

To this point, Jon, might you consider site licenses for the final DF?

Unfortunately with Windows XP/Vista I have no control over the image format, so I have to generate an uncompressed .bmp file which is usually quite large. :( This is changing in Windows 7 though, so once I do some more Windows 7 testing I will be able to add some Windows 7 specific optimizations.

For site licenses, I am always open to negotiation. There is some pricing information on volume discounts (up to 5 licenses) on the purchase page, but for anything over 10 licenses I would recommend getting in touch directly to work something out.

Just to follow-up, I received a PM from John letting me know that Irfanview is working fine with Beta 22. :) Thanks John!

Yup - I should have posted it here, my bad.

I tried t upload a Snipping tool pic of my Desktop and it is 8 MB in size - as a PNG....

Anyhoo, I am going to play around with dual monitor setups and a coupe of recent games, Mass Effect and The Witcher, and see how DF does with them in play on W7....
