Hi,

I was looking for a function that gathered all windows of a certain type (e.g. All Word documents) to a specific monitor. That would IMO help facilitate rearranging them.

For e.g. I have 4xmonitors. I open 40 pdfs (yes, i do this regularly) and sort them between 4x screens according to topic. I move on in the research and want reorganise by a related topic. So, it would be easier for me to gather them all to a single monitor; close the ones I don't want; & resort the others (like dealing cards) than the alternatives.

If there is such a function that already does this or another method of doing this that I've overlooked, please let me know.

Many thanks! :)

Man, you take "power-user" to a whole new level don't you !!

Don't like your chances of finding such an app grouper, but might I suggest a virtual desktop solution ?
Something like Cube Desktop or Stardock Tiles perhaps ?
You could also adopt a simpler solution like opening PDF's in a browser - 1 per tab...

Thanks for the info. :) I'll give tiles a try as I have not had a look at this yet. Not sure if a virtual desktop solution will resolve the situation though.

Regarding opening pdfs in tabs. I don't really like doing this as it makes it more difficult to cross reference things easily. Also the functionality is not just limited to pdfs; but also chrome windows (which already have things in tabs); terminator instances; word docs; etc.

Cheers! :)

Power user indeed! I can certainly add this to our feature request list, though I can't guarantee we can implement it in the immediate future. If you were to run this "Gather" Function, and select Adobe Reader for example, would you want it to just move all of the windows to the specified monitor, or would it also need to tile them so that you can see all of them at the same time?

Adding it to the list sounds great! :)

I think the tiling idea is a good one if there are not too many windows, because once the number gets above a certain level, they are tiled too small and you cannot see the contents. Maybe an option to tile if under x number of windows? and/or the ability to turn the tiling option off if needed as I guess different people will have contrasting opinions on it.

Many thanks again!

There is another associated idea that I have not thought through as much, but maybe you can use it. It is:

The Ability to arbitrarily group windows together. So if you move one, the other follows. I've only thought it out in relation to a 2x2 setup.

e.g. You link a chrome browser window (containing help documentation) on the left to the program it is related to on the right. You then have the option to move both windows up 1 monitor in tandem.

3 4 ^
1 2 |

or to move snakewise (follow-the-leader) one to the right or left.

Cheers!

Also an interesting idea! I'll add that to our feature request list as well :)

Thanks!

obviously if you added this kind of grouping feature. i.e.

1) group by application type
2) group by arbitrary user selection

You can extend the functionality by also having commands to close, tile/cascade, minimise all windows in a specific group.

This could be in addition with the ability to close windows in a group (more relevant to 1) on a specific monitor.

Probably be best to sort this with keyboard shortcuts though IMO as buttons would probably get messy.

Don't know how hard this would be to implement, but I'm pretty sure it won't be trivial! :)

This is not a bad idea. Actually you could set custom window dimensions in Settings > Triggers, by creating a seperate trigger for a process, window text or a window class. Could be a possibility to specify multiple processes, so an action applies to processes instead of creating a seperate trigger for each process?
