I can't figure out how to get Windows modern/metro apps, like the Microsoft Edge browser or Windows settings, to open where I want them and at the size I want. They usually open in full screen on my primary monitor. I have tried using the instructions at https://www.displayfusion.com/Discussions/View/configuring-trigger-rules-for-universal-apps/?ID=36119d2c-9928-424c-8cfb-8a60d0e60d69 and modifying them for apps other than Calendar but the trigger never works.

Also, when following those instructions there was a huge delay after checking the "Process Filename" checkbox before the "Select Application" window appears, so long that the titlebar text changes to "not responding",so I was giving up and closing the settings window until I was called away from my computer during one attempt and came back about five minutes later to see the window had opened.

The slow "Select Application" window issue will be fixed up in the next version.

If you don't specify a Process Filename, and just specify the Window Text (e.g. "Edge"), does that work?

It seems to be working with just the window text "Start ‎- Microsoft Edge", for now. I can see it open maximized and then it quickly changes to what I want it to be.
Thanks for your help!

EDIT

Looks like I spoke too soon. The title text changes as the browser opens the home page, the time it takes to settle down dependent on network response time. Even with a 30 second delay it isn't triggering.

Try putting just "Edge" in the rule, that will match it regardless of the page title.

Doesn't help, it's still opening maximized.

Strange! It's working for me when I try that. Could you send me a debug log?

  • On the DisplayFusion Settings > Troubleshooting tab, change the Logging drop-down to "L1: Log Minimal" and click Apply
  • Try opening Edge
  • Click the "Export Info to File" button on the Settings > Troubleshooting tab
  • Reply with the file attached
  • Disable debug logging after sending the log

If you could attach a backup of your Settings as well, that would be great. (Settings > Options > Export)

Thanks!

Thanks! It's working for me using those settings. What page does your Edge window open to by default?

https://account.microsoft.com/rewards/
The browser tab shows different text as the page loads and I am automatically logged in. Eventually it says "Microsoft account | Rewards Dashboard ‎- Microsoft Edge". I have tried using some or all of the text, and adding a delay, but the trigger doesn't work consistently, except the last few dozen times I've tried, when it consistently doesn't work.

Ok, what if you disable the Window Text condition, and just put
*edge*
(include the asterisks) as the Process Filename?

  • On the DisplayFusion Settings > Troubleshooting tab, change the Logging drop-down to "L1: Log Minimal" and click Apply
  • Try launching Edge, and note the time so we'll know where to check in the log file

Thanks! It looks like Edge is getting hooked, but the Trigger still isn't firing for some reason. Could you send me an updated backup of your settings?

Thanks! I did have some trouble when using your settings backup. Here's how I was able to make it work reliably on my machine. Please see the attached screenshot for reference.

Strange! How are you launching Edge? (Desktop icon, taskbar button, Start menu?)

I usually use a button pinned to the taskbar. I just tried opening it from the start menu a number of times and it worked properly every time. I then tried from the taskbar button and it worked as desired every time but one. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Interesting! Is the pinned taskbar button on the Primary monitor taskbar, or the second monitor taskbar?

Ok, thanks! That's how I was testing it too, no idea why yours is behaving differently :(

If you launch it from a desktop icon, does the Trigger rule work?

Just thought I'd let you know that it's now working. I don't know why, I haven't changed any settings in DF. I just hope I'm not jinxing myself by posting this!
