Image 1 on Monitor 1
Image 2 on Monitor 2

If Monitor 1 is disabled, all of a sudden instead of keeping its Image 2 - Monitor 2 switches to Image 1, just because the other monitor got disabled.

Is there are any way to assign images to monitors and make them stay assigned even if other monitors are disabled? In other words, Image 2 stays on Monitor 2, regardless of other monitors being removed from the system while the computer is on.

The wallpaper settings are tied to the monitor ID. If the monitor that used to be ID 1 gets disabled, then the monitor that was ID 2 changes to ID 1, and DisplayFusion sets the wallpaper for ID 1.

However, if you create different Wallpaper Profiles in DisplayFusion, then save each monitor layout as Monitor Profile (Monitor Configuration window), you can assign the Wallpaper Profiles to the Monitor Profiles so that they get applied automatically when the monitor layout is detected.

Please let me know if you need further instructions on how to set that up :)

Thanks!

Thank you for helping Keith. I definitely need help on how to do that, is there a page that explains this on the site? People have a computer monitor but then they connect their Plasma TV to their computer too. Well... IDs change *all the time* depending on whether the TV is on or not.

We definitely want to assign wallpapers to monitors *not IDs*, so how would that go about?

There actually aren't any step-by-step instructions on the site, but I should probably write some up :)

Here they are:
  • In the DisplayFusion Monitor Configuration, setup your first monitor setup (TV not enabled), then use the Save button to save it as a new Monitor Profile
  • In the DisplayFusion Wallpaper Configuration, click New Profile and give it a name
  • Set the wallpapers up and click OK
  • In the Monitor Configuration window, click Manage Monitor Profiles
  • Select your Monitor Profile, then use the Wallpaper Profiles button to assign your Wallpaper Profile to it
  • Repeat the above steps for any other monitor setups that you have

Hope that helps!

Thank you kindly, it worked. After a switch, there is a second or two pause, then slow transition to saved settings as described by you. This is great. Can there be an option (just an additional option) for no pause / faster implementation rather than a second or two pause, then slow transition to saved settings after second monitor is disabled?

Windows 8 can do either/or when it comes to single Wallpaper vs. Random Wallpapers.
So if you wish to have a single Wallpaper for monitor and random Wallpapers for TV, you cannot use Windows 8 configuration for that. You *have to* use DisplayFusion and I was not able to find any other program that can do that, other than DisplayFusion.

If I may say, I cannot even think of what else I would use DisplayFusion for - other than what I just described so I only say this to emphasize my surprise that your instructions were not written before.

If others find this to be the main, if not the only purpose of using DisplayFusion (as it is mine) - then please consider a button in the Desktop Wallpaper configuration that would simply perform a permanent one click assignment to monitors, not IDs. In other words, you set up Wallpapers, then you click to permanently assign what was setup preventing any changes with monitor connection/disconnection. Can this be done?

Until then I simplified your instructions and saved them for myself, I think it is unlikely the average user will figure this out on their own:

Thanks again!

1. Enable single monitor only > Right click on DisplayFusion in Task Bar > Desktop Wallpaper > [upper center] Save As > Single Monitor > OK

2. Right click on DisplayFusion in Task Bar > Monitor Configuration > [upper left] Save Profile... > New Profile > Single Monitor > OK

3. [upper center] Manage Monitor Profiles > Click on Single Monitor > Wallpaper Profile button > Single Monitor > Close OK

4. Enable second monitor > Right click on DisplayFusion in Task Bar > Desktop Wallpaper > [upper center] Save As > Dual Monitor > OK

5. Right click on DisplayFusion in Task Bar > Monitor Configuration > [upper left] Save Profile... > New Profile > Dual Monitor > OK

6. [upper center] Manage Monitor Profiles > Click on Dual Monitor > Wallpaper Profile button > Dual Monitor > Close OK

Awesome, glad to hear it worked, and thank you for the feedback!

There isn't a hard coded delay for changing the wallpaper, so there's not much we can do there, but you can eliminate the transition by disabling the "Use transitions when changing wallpaper" option in the Wallpaper Settings (button at the bottom of the normal Wallpaper window, next to the OK button).

Thanks!
