I recently had to update my system from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1. After doing so I seem to be having an issue with the Start menu always opening on a secondary monitor whenever I use the Windows Key on my keyboard.

In Windows 8 whenever I clicked the Windows key the Start Menu would open on the screen it was last opened on. For example I would use my mouse to open the Charm bar and select the Start icon on my 2nd monitor. Any time after that if I clicked my Windows Key on the keyboard the Start Menu would always open on my 2nd monitor. If I were to click the Start button on my primary monitor (either through the charm bar or through the bottom left corner) then the start menu would always open on the Primary Monitor any time after that.

However after upgrading to Windows 8.1 the Start Menu always open on the Primary Monitor even if I just opened the Start Menu on the 2nd monitor.

I am not using any custom Start Menu replacements, it is the stock start menu.

I looked through the forums and tried a few different things but could not get it working like it used to.
By setting the Task Bar "Properties - Navigation tab - Show Start on the Display I'm using when I press the Windows logo key" I could get the Start Menu to be open wherever my cursor was at but that is not quite what I wanted.
Tried the "Invoke Start Menu Using Click Instead of Windows Key" in the Advanced settings without any luck
I didn't see any other settings that seemed to reference what I was trying to do.

Is there a way to lock the Start Menu to a specific monitor in Windows 8.1 like there was in Windows 8?

As far as I know, it should still work the way it did in Windows 8.0, assuming you've got the 'Show Start on the Display I'm using when I press the Windows logo key' option disabled.

If you exit DisplayFusion, does it still behave the way you described, or does it work correctly?

Thanks for the response Keith,

Yep the "Show Start on the Display I'm using when I press the Windows logo key" is disabled but still not working like it used to.

Attached is my debug log with L1: Log Minimal set and the DebugInfo.html file.

Here are the key presses that you should see in the log:
1. Started everything at 12:52
2. Started key presses at 12:53
3. Pressed the Windows key 10 times (opened and closed the start menu on my number 2 monitor [as per the Monitor Configuration window] 5 times.)
4. Put my cursor in the top left corner of the number 1 monitor to pull up the Charm Bar and clicked the Windows icon. The Start Menu opened on my #1 monitor as expected.
5. Clicked on the Desktop tile in the Start Menu to go back to close the Start Menu
6. Waited a few seconds and then pressed the Windows Key on my keyboard. The Start Menu opened on my # 2 Monitor instead of my #1 monitor.
7. Pressed the Windows Key to close the Start Menu
8. Went through steps 4 & 5 3 times in a row.
9. Waited a few seconds and then pressed the Windows Key on my keyboard. The Start Menu opened on my # 2 Monitor instead of my #1 monitor again.
10. Should be done testing by 12:54

Let me know if there is anything else you need or if there is anything else you would like me to test.

Thanks,

John

Sorry forgot to include this info, but when I disable Display Fusion it works the same way as with Display Fusion. The Windows Key always opens the Start Menu on Monitor #2 even if it was last opened and closed it on Monitor #1.

Thanks! Yeah, the log doesn't indicate that DisplayFusion is moving it, and DisplayFusion doesn't actually have any features that would move it, unless you've enabled the Mini Start Screen option on the Settings > Windows 8 tab. So, I'm not sure what could be causing that, as it doesn't happen on my machine here :(

The only other thing I could suggest is to disable all startup items (you can do this using the Startup tab in the Windows Task Manager), then reboot and test it out again. If it works correctly, then you'll know that some other program is messing with it :)

Hope that helps!
