When using the new Task View with Timeline feature in the Windows 10 Insider Preview, having DisplayFusion 9.1 Beta running causes Task View to either load very slowly, not overlay correctly, yet still set as active, so clicking does weird things, or crash Explorer, causing it to restart. I'm currently using build 17101, but this has been an issue ever since the Timeline feature was released. Closing out of DisplayFusion resolves all of these issues.

Could you send me a debug log? I wonder if DisplayFusion is trying to set TitleBar Buttons on top of it or something.

  • On the DisplayFusion Settings > Troubleshooting tab, change the Logging drop-down to "L1: Log Minimal" and click Apply
  • Reproduce the issue and note the time so we'll know where to check in the log file
  • Click the "Export Info to File" button on the Settings > Troubleshooting tab
  • Reply with the file attached
  • Disable debug logging after sending the log

Here's the info, the issue happens multiple times between 2:18:40 and 2:19:20.

Thanks, I don't see anything suspicious in the log. If you disable the TitleBar Buttons (Settings > Functions tab), does that make any difference at all?

That option is already disabled, so no.

Ok, can you try disabling the Multi-Monitor Taskbars next (Settings > Taskbar)?

Ok, how about if you disable the Application Hooks (Settings > Advanced Settings) and restart DisplayFusion?

Disabling the Applications Hooks seems to have fixed it.

Ok, thanks! Would you be able to capture a video of what happens when it's broken (with the hooks enabled?)

Here's the video, the beginning is with hooks enabled, and afterwards, I demonstrate what should happen (with hooks disabled). As you can see, when I click on Task View with hooks, the overlay doesn't show but I can still click on windows, which is why that one browser window restores after I click on what appears to be the empty background.

Awesome, thanks for the video! That's definitely not happening here for me, even with the hooks enabled. Would you be able to attach a backup of your DisplayFusion settings? You can export them on the Settings > Options tab.

Thanks!

Thanks! Still no luck reproducing the issue here. This is very strange! Does it matter which programs you have open at the time? I only have DisplayFusion running, and then I'm testing with an open Edge window and File Explorer window. I also tested with both windows visible, and both windows minimized.

I just wanted to chime in and let you know that I'm experiencing exactly the same issue as gyroknight shows in the video. Disabling application hooks also works for me to restore normal timeline functionality. This is on the Spring Creators Update (build 1803). Let me know if I can do anything to help you out with testing.

Thanks Matt! I was actually able to reproduce this eventually, just forgot to update this topic, sorry! I've added it to our list, and we'll post an update as soon as it's all fixed up.

Is this working correctly for you now? We were about to start working on it, but when we try with the latest insider build of Windows 10, we can't reproduce this any more.

I just moved to the Release Preview Ring to get the 17134 build (fixes a reported bug with the original 1803 release candidate) and I'm still experiencing the problem.

Same here, still occurring on 17134 with the latest DisplayFusion Beta.

I still can't reproduce this here with the latest Insider Build. I wonder what's different between our systems. Could you try updating to 9.2 Beta 1, and if you can still reproduce it, send me a new backup of your DisplayFusion Settings?

Copy of my settings attached (I also sent a copy of my settings through the contact form before I realised I could protect the attachment here). Anyway, hope it helps and thanks for continuing to look into the issue.

I noticed the same issue and workaround works for me for now. On Version 1803 - Build 17134.1.

Are there any special steps required to get this to happen? I'm on the 1803 update, and I can't reproduce this issue with DisplayFusion 9.1, nor 9.2 Beta 1. I'm stumped on this :(

Same for me. Using ALT-Tab shows multiple instances of a non-responsive Task View. This problem began installing the 1803 update released yesterday.

Configuration is a Surface Book as a secondary monitor with an 4K primary screen.

Turning off Application Hooks solves this problem, but lose other DisplayFusion functionality.

Note that I'm running 4 monitors, not sure if this affects it.

OK, if everyone that's running into this could update to 9.2 Beta 1, and attach a copy of their troubleshooting info, that would be great! Here are the steps:

  • Update to DisplayFusion 9.2 Beta 1
  • Open the Settings > Troubleshooting tab
  • Click the "Export Info to File" button
  • Reply with the file attached

Same problem here. Should be able to install April Update it to verify the issue.

I suspect more people will be complaining next Tuesday, as it will be rolling out through Windows Update then.

Beta 2 (which is already out now) or are you talking about another one, Beta 3? Wondering if I should even bother with Beta 2 if Beta 3 is tomorrow.

Can confirm fixed with Beta 2. The window drawing seems slower after the upgrade, not sure if this is in anyway related.

Thanks!

@Special: Beta 2 (just released) should fix this issue, yep!

@David: Haven't run into any issues with window redraws here, but if they persist after a reboot, and go away when you exit DisplayFusion, please let me know.

Thanks!

Hi, just came to report this problem on 1803. I have DisplayFusion (Steam) any timeline(see what I did there?) for when a fix will make it to the steam version? Have uninstalled for now, as it was making my system a bit flaky. Oh running English, but English UK if that helps

It's fixed in the current beta, which you can install over top of your Steam version. Just install the Steam version again, then download and install the beta from our website. It will keep your license and settings intact :)
