Hi,

I have licensed DF Pro 8.1.2, running on Win 7 SP1

I am experiencing an issue with Triggers, in that they are disappearing/deleted

Strangely, the only persistent Trigger is the one that sends any DF window (specified by pointing at its exe) to monitor #2; all the rest have disappeared

Is this a known issue? or can you suggest something to help?

many thanks,
john

We've had this reported a couple of times before, but I've never been able to get it to happen here. Are there any steps that seem to cause this to happen reliably?

Hi,

Unfortunately, I can't think of anything that might be the cause.

Ok, no worries. The next time it happens, could you note any special circumstances? e.g. Did it happen after updating DisplayFusion, or after a reboot, etc?

Hi, I haven't had a recurrence as yet.

I've taken a backup (export) of my settings with my triggers set up.

What is the best/safest way to restore them from the backup/export?
i.e. should I delete anything from the registry first, and what should I restore?

Many thanks,
John

You can just click the Restore Settings button on the Options tab and then choose the backup file that you created. It will take care of clearing the old stuff and importing the backup :)

Hi,

I just lost all my Triggers, with nothing unusual having happened.

I reloaded the setting as you suggested, which obviously restored the Triggers and all the other settings.

Re question re restoring the Triggers; I only wanted to restore the Triggers not all the settings. Is this possible and if so what parts the .reg file do I need to run?

Many thanks,
John

You just need the sections in the .reg file that start with "[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Binary Fortress Software\DisplayFusion\Triggers]"

There's the main key, and then the subkeys with guids that look like this: "[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Binary Fortress Software\DisplayFusion\Triggers\0174494a-e798-4799-a586-2410d6c75161]"

I'll ask our devs to do a code review for anything that could cause the Triggers to disappear, since it doesn't seem to be easily repeatable. Is it just the Triggers that are lost, no other DisplayFusion Settings?

One other follow-up question, what anti-virus software are you using? I'm wondering if some anti-virus apps might be deleting the registry keys because they contain C# code.

Hi,

I thought that might be case, I didn't know if there were cross dependencies.

I haven't noticed any other setting being lost or changed.

I use Sophos a/v.

Ok, thanks! Is there anything in the Sophos logs about removing registry keys around the time that the Triggers were lost?

Also, if you run a full scan with Sophos, does it remove the Triggers?

sorry for the slow response, there is no mention of sophos remove registry keys and the triggers are still there after a full scan

Ok, thanks for trying that! We'll keep you posted if we have anything else to check, or hopefully when we find the issue and fix it up :)

Hello! I am having the SAME problem on my Pro Trial 8.1.2 DF. The only trigger I'm setting up is the combination to save window positions on a laptop when docking. Reading the thread, I am using Kaspersky Lab Internet Security 17.0.0.611(g) and am not rebooting, nor is any scan running that I'm aware of. (There could be some real-time app scan due to the C+ code that was mentioned?) This has happened twice - I've set up the triggers and when I go back a few minutes later, they're no longer in the list and triggers are disabled (checkbox un-cheked).

Hoping you can help - please let me know if I can provide anything further.
Thank you,
Justin

@JustinC: It sounds like your settings aren't saving at all. Are you making sure to click Apply in the main Settings window after creating your Trigger rules?

Hi,
I've just discovered that the last three (in the Triggers window) were lost.

Restored them from registry backup, all ok at the moment.

One thing I discovered is that TextPad saves text as unicode, where as .reg files must be be saved as ansi...

Hi Keith, Thank you for your reply. This seems to be fine now and the feature also seems to be working well for maintaining window positions. Perhaps it was pilot error, but I'd hate to think that as a tech veteran! ;-) Quite sure I hit Apply, then OK to save everything. In any event, my settings have now survived dock cycles, reboots and time... Thank you again! -Justin

@Justin: No worries, glad to hear it!

@johnb: If you delete and re-create the ones that get lost from scratch, instead of restoring from backup, do they still disappear?

Yes they do disappear if they are recreated from scratch, before I started restoring them backup (I didn't have a current backup) I was recreating them.

Sorry for the delay on this! I've been stumped but was thinking about it again today. Can you attach a backup of your settings?

Do the "Window Created" triggers ever disappear, or is it only the triggers for other Trigger Events that are disappearing?

Ok, thanks. I think this issue actually happened to me last week, but I only lost a few of the Triggers, and I haven't been able to reproduce it again since then :(

We'll keep investigating and hopefully find the cause soon!

Mine are disappearing, too. This is most annoying. Have you identified any causes or remedies?

We weren't able to find anything obvious that could be causing this, no. It is still open on our list and we will be revisiting it for the next version.

Thanks!

Hi, Keith.

I've edited a .reg file I had that had all my in-place, working triggers. I removed all keys except the keys and subkeys that you described above.

The problem is, when I restore that .reg file, ALL my DisplayFusion settings go away, including the triggers. I'm really getting frustrated, because at this point I have no ability restore things to a previous working arrangement. I have 3 monitor profiles, associated icon profiles, and many of these were changed in the last few days, weeks, and months to accommodate for hardware changes. If your theory is correct, I should be able to restore a profile from earlier today, when my hardware/monitor changes and profiles were correctly set, but my trigger settings disappeared. Then I could restore only the keys that controlled the triggers. But it doesn't work.

Please, please provide a solution!

So you have a backup that restores all of your settings except the Triggers, and then a separate .reg file that has just the Triggers? If that's the case, this should hopefully work:

  • Use DisplayFusion to restore the first backup file/
  • Exit DisplayFusion completely (make sure DisplayFusion.exe is no longer showing up in Task Manager)
  • Double-click the .reg file that has the Triggers in it, choose yes to import
  • Launch DisplayFusion

Hope that helps!

Thanks, Keith.

I'll try that the next time I find disappearing triggers. In the meantime, I'm having a good deal of difficulty with my icon profiles working. It may be a conflict with Stardock Fences, though.

No worries!

Fences and DisplayFusion's Desktop Icon Profiles definitely aren't compatible with each other. DisplayFusion and Fences can both run at the same time, but I wouldn't recommend using our Desktop Icon Profiles if you want to use Fences.

Hey all! We've added some more logging in DisplayFusion 9.2.4 for this issue. Can you enable L1 logging on the Troubleshooting tab, and then if the Triggers disappear again, send us the debug logs right away?

Thanks!

We've just released a new DisplayFusion beta version and we're fairly certain this issue is all fixed up. Please let us know if you still run into any trouble after updating.

Thanks, Keith. I installed the beta yesterday morning, and so far, so good. I've not worked outside of my home office yet, so I can't tell whether other triggers and monitor profiles are being autorecognized.

I'll be sure to update when I'm back in my workplace office on Tuesday.

I appreciate your followup!
