My set up:

64 bit Win 7 fully up to date
NVIDIA drivers fully up to date
EVGA GeForce GTX 750 Ti with one each HDMI, DVI, and DisplayPort - will drive all 3 simultaneously

2 display configurations

Desktop
DisplayPort - 27" Monitor - Acer K272 set to max resolution 2560x1440 with medium desktop icons
DVI - 22" Monitor - ACER 223W bd max resolution of 1650 x 1024 but I run it at less than that because that is just too small to read. Not currently attached pending locating my DVI cable.

Recreational
HDMI - 32" TV - Samsung LN32a450d running at max resolution 1920x1080 and set to properly size display area even when non-Windows-standard resolutions are being used.

PROBLEMS:

Win7 does not properly support monitors of differing resolutions. Vista did - Win7 won't.

If DisplayPort monitor is powered off (which I do to cut down on power/heat when running something that is going to take a long time), Win7 will switch the main display to any other monitor it knows about and screws up the desktop in the process.

When I had DisplayFusion running. and set it to display the taskbar on both monitors (with the Acer 272 as main and Samsung as secondary), if I turned off the Acer on the DP that caused windows to switch the main monitor to the Samsung, which caused lots of problems. If I left it on, I could not find a way to configure DF to run a screen saver (blank, to reduce power consumption and heat generation) on ONLY one monitor. It would always run the screen saver on both monitors, or on neither.

If I configured to run with only one monitor and ignore the other, I could at least power down the one I wasn't using - but it still messes up the desktop layout.

Windows handles one monitor at a time just fine. And DisplayFusion, since it runs constantly in the background, was intercepting keystroke controls that I use in other programs. So I gave up on it and uninstalled it.

However now that I have my new desk, I need to hook monitor #3 back in (Acer 223W). Win7 won't handle 2 monitors properly, let alone 3.

So I am going to have to give DisplayFusion another whirl.

I need to be able to run with either of the 2 settings listed above - either both ACER monitors, or the Samsung TV.

In addition, I use a Logitech trackball with the Samsung TV - which requires a faster mouse speed to be of much use. I also run the sound through the HDMI to the TV.

With the Desktop setup (2 monitors), I use an optical mouse which needs a slower mouse speed, and I run the sound through Desktop Speakers.

Because these monitors are of different resolutions, they require different desktop layouts as well.

I think I saw that you have some scripting ability with DisplayFusion - can it handle making those system changes as part of the configuration of each monitor setup?

Can DisplayFusion automatically choose the correct configuration based on which monitor is currently turned on - eg if the Acer is on, use the configuration, desktop layout, mouse, and speaker settings for that, or if the Samsung is on, choose the appropriate settings for that?

Is there anyway to get a screensaver to run on only one specific monitor when multiple monitors are connected and powered up?

Is there a way to stop applications from trying to open on a monitor that is currently powered down? Win 7 does this all the time and it drives me batty. It opens the program, but not on the active main screen - only on the monitor where it last ran, even if it is powered down.

Help?

This is currently on our feature request list, but at the moment we don't have an ETA on it.

You can just disable the "Enable Key Combinations" setting on the Settings > Functions tab to resolve this.

You can use Monitor Profiles to easily switch between the different setups: http://www.displayfusion.com/kb/monitorprofiles

Unfortunately DisplayFusion wouldn't be able to adjust the mouse sensitivity, but you could switch audio devices automatically using the Monitor Profiles as well :)

Same goes for this, just create a desktop icon profile and assign it to the Monitor Profile.

You can create a Window Location rule that will move all new windows to the monitor that currently has the mouse cursor. See the fourth example ("Creating a Window Location rule to move all new windows to the current monitor") here: http://www.displayfusion.com/kb/windowlocation

Hope that helps! Please let me know if you need a new 30-day trial key for DisplayFusion.

So what CAN you do with the scripting function? I could have sworn I saw it being used for similar task (changing Win7 configuration parameters).

Given that my hard drive has taken a walk on the Wild Side (eg it is in the process of committing hari-kari) I shouldn't need a new key, should I? As it will be reinstalled (eventually) on a new SSD/HD configuration with a brand-spankin' new registry. Basically as if it had never been installed at all.

Anything you can do in C#.net or VB.net you can do with a DF script, which brought me to look into it again, and it looks like it might actually be possible to adjust the mouse sensitivity via script. I'll keep you posted on what we find out.

Regarding your license question, you can just re-install it using the same license key :)

Good news! Thomas here was able to write up scripts for increasing and decreasing mouse speed. I've attached them to this post. Here's how to set them up:
  • On the DisplayFusion Settings > Functions tab, click the "Add Scripted" button
  • Paste in the code from one of the attached files
  • Give it a name and a key combination and click OK
  • Optionally, select it, click "Toggle TitleBar Button" (to add it to the caption bar of every application)
  • Click Apply and test it out

You could also add a line to the script to make it load a Monitor Profile at the same time. Please let me know if you'd like me to add that :)

Thanks!
