Hello. Long time user, love the app.
Now I want something simple, but apparently hard.
I've tried looking at "triggers" and "functions"...

I have three PCs and three Monitors.
Most of the time, I have the three monitors connected the the main PC.
Set up as Monitor #2, #1, #3. Left, Center, Right.
That works just nice. Each monitor has a separate Wallpaper.

The problems begin when I switch Monitors #2 and/or #3 to PC #2 and/or #3.
The Wallpaper assigned to Monitor #1 goes to Right monitor (that system now sees that as "#2").
The Wallpaper assigned to Monitor #2 goes to Center monitor #1.
When I turn the Left Monitor #2 on again, the Wallpaper from orevious Monit... I can't be bothered writing more. What happens is just crazy and apparently random.

Suffice to say, whatever I do, when I go back to "normal" status (2,1,3, Left, Center, Right) what I want to happen never happens. How can I "lock" my assigned wallpapers to the correct monitor? I never want them to move around, no matter what. For any reason. Ever.

Not if I turn any monitor on or off, not if my PC crashes, I get divorced or if WW3 breaks out.
To be clear, I want the Wallpaper assigned to Monitor #1 to stay on Monitor #1 at all times, regardless of the status of Monitors #2 or #3. I want the assigned Wallpapers assigned to Monitor #2 and #3 to stay there, whether they're on or off.

Any advice on how to get this done simply, which in my mind is how it should be be default?
Not using complicated scripts, nor a dozen assigned shortcuts, not meddling in settings or edit INI files ten times a day. By design and as default, without the need of constant input.

Could you send me over two copies of your troubleshooting info, one when the wallpaper is correct, and another when it's incorrect after the monitors have been re-connected? Here are the steps:

  • Open the Settings > Troubleshooting tab
  • Click the "Export Info to File" button
  • Reply with the file attached

As long as I dont CHANGE anything (wrong wallpapers) when I unplug left Mon #2, it returns to normal when I plug it back in (I used Triggers to re-enable the 3mon profile). However, if I CHANGE the wallpapers to the correct set when still on 2 monitors, it fails when I return to normal. However, not using a VIDEO but a fixed image for the primary monitor improved things as well. Guess that code is newer or more complicated...

Here are two examples: 3 monitors (#2,#1,#3) and #2 disconnected (1#,2#). The wallpappers just "shift" one step to the right. #2 (disconnected) goes to primary #1, and primary #1 wallpaper goes to former #3, now #2.

The Trigger I used is "Monitor Profile Change", but I assume that allso triggers when I unplug the left monitor? I don't think I can set trigger to monitor like "left" or by som ID?

Ah, YES I CAN!

As long as I set up 4 different monitor profiles and corresponding 4 wallpapers profiles, I can use a trigger to detect the new monitor profile and then automatically set the correct wallpaper profile.

I figured it out. Thanks for a software that, however slightly complicated and tedious, solved a problem that Microsoft should never have invented in the first place. :D

As long as I only use pictures, and not video. That does still goof it up. Perhaps there's some delay in loading a video file? Will test...

Ah yeah, if you were using a trigger to apply it, it would just add the wallpapers to the adjusted monitor ID's.

In the DisplayFusion Monitor Configuration window, you can click the "Manage Monitor Profiles" button, and add a wallpaper profile to your monitor profile. It will automatically load the wallpaper profile when it detects the monitor profile is loaded, which will only happen when your ID's are in the correct locations. Give that a shot and let me know if you still run into issues.

Ah, another way to do it, thanks!

On the same topic (changing Monitor layouts) can we get a "refresh desktop icons" (a press "F5") as a trigger option? They too move around, and sometimes some of the desktop icons are hidden after a monitor change (even after reloading a desktop icon profile).

Invariably, all my Desktop Icons end up on Monitor #2 (either on the left or the right monitor). Reloading the profile sets them up in order on *that* monitor, they don't return to Monitor #1 (where they always should be).

It seems the "Save icon profile" function in DF doesn't save the Monitor they're on, only the position of the icons themselves.

I'm now using "Fences" from StarDock to keep them on Monitor #1, but sometimes I also need to press F5 to actually show them again, as they hide in all the confusion between OS and the softwares.

Is your primary monitor changing when the icons get swapped? The icons are saved based on the 0,0 location of the primary monitor, so if it's getting changed, it would cause this.

All relevant applications, and Windows OS, still see my primary monitor as "Monitor 1". The one that never turns off or disconnects. This never changes.

Perhaps this is due to some hardvare glitch, becase no matter what setting I use in my BIOS, the boot menu always shows on my right monitor (which would be #3). Unless I only have #1 active, then it shows there...

Like I said, this seems random at times and makes no sense... :-)

This may not be the right place, but considering the enourmous amounts of functions available already, would a "Move all windows to current monitor AND CURRENT VIRTUAL DESKTOP" be possible to implemement? In short, get ALL windows and applications to right where you are looking. With the existing "Move all windows to current monitor" they are still spread out across the virtual desktops.

Could you send me over a debug log? Here are the steps:

  • On the DisplayFusion Settings > Troubleshooting tab, change the Logging drop-down to "L1: Log Minimal" and click Apply
  • Reproduce the issue and note the time so we'll know where to check in the log file
  • Click the "Export Info to File" button on the Settings > Troubleshooting tab
  • Reply with the file attached
  • Disable debug logging after sending the log

I've added that function to our feature request list as well :)
