I recently started using window position profiles again, but they don't seem to be working.
Steps:
- Save the position profile
- get confirmation of save
- undock laptop
- work off dock in meetings, etc for a while
- redock (to same dock & monitors)
- manually load position profile

Result:
- windows jump around as if DF tries to restore them, but it's 80%+ wrong.

Note:
- my dock is a USB-C dock, HP OEM.
- tried where (when docked)
- Primary monitor == built-in laptop screen.
- Primary monitor != built-in laptop screen.
-Both fail to restore p.

Other (maybe unrelated) info:
I've had some issues where windows get thrown off-screen and aren't visible any more. They show up with alt-Tab but when selected they don't show (like they are on some non-existent monitor). Have to move them back to real monitors with tricks like these

Any idea why? Things I should try, debug info I can provide to help diagnose?

Thanks.

Could you send me two copies of your troubleshooting info, one when you save the profiles and you haven't taken the laptop off the dock, and another when you go to restore the profile and it's been re-docked? Here are the steps:

  • On the DisplayFusion Settings > Troubleshooting tab, change the Logging drop-down to "L1: Log Minimal" and then click "Clear Log"
  • Reproduce the issue and note the time so we'll know where to check in the log file
  • Click the "Export Info to File" button on the Settings > Troubleshooting tab
  • Reply with the file attached
  • Disable debug logging after sending the log

Sorry - I'm still trying to replicate this and get you the logs. Haven't forgotten, just been busy.

Here are the logs.

4 captures, each after different steps in the process. This occured about 1:43pm

  • "Step01_DisplayFusionDebugInfo-notDocked-2025-10-01.zip"
    - I had been using my laptop at meetings, was about to re-dock so I captured a log. FYI - I had hit the issue several times already this morning, just had a chance to do the captures and knew it would happen @ docking so started the process.

  • "Step02_DisplayFusionDebugInfo-notDocked-cleared_log.2025-10-01.zip"
    - Still undocked, I just cleared the logs in prep to dock and made this capture
  • "Step03_DisplayFusionDebugInfo-afterDocked-2025-10-01.zip"
    - I docked my laptop, gave it a minute or so to "settle" then made this capture
  • "Step04_DisplayFusionDebugInfo-afterDocked-afterLoadWindowProfile.2025-10-01.zip"
    - I loaded the saved window location profile. It flashed around a bunch of the entries on the primary taskbar, but none of the windows actually got pushed anywhere. All windows stayed on primary monitor (built-in laptop display in this case.) again, let it settle a minute or so and made this capture.

Hopefully this makes sense, LMK if you need more debug info

Do you have a capture before the laptop is taken off the dock in the first place? I want to compare the original info DisplayFusion sees when it first saves the profile, to the info it sees after it's been re-docked.

Those are all the logs I captured from that one.

So it's really hard to get what you want (a capture before it happens and one after) because I never know when it's going to happen.

I have attached logs from where it worked correctly, not sure that's really what you want or will help, but it's the best I can do right now.

Thanks for sending that over, the monitors look to be in the exact same position after you re-dock, so that's good. Could you update to our latest beta and grab a fresh debug log when you run the Window Position Profile? Here are the steps:

  • On the DisplayFusion Settings > Troubleshooting tab, change the Logging drop-down to "L1: Log Minimal" and then click "Clear Log"
  • Reproduce the issue and note the time so we'll know where to check in the log file
  • Click the "Export Info to File" button on the Settings > Troubleshooting tab
  • Reply with the file attached
  • Disable debug logging after sending the log
