I have DisplayFusion Pro on Steam 7.3.4. The basic functionality such as hotkeys and the multi-monitor taskbar works, but i can not open any settings windows unless using an administrator account. If i try to open a settings windows i get the error: "DisplayFusionSettings.exe - Application Error -- The application was unable to start correctly (0xc0000022).". I tried reinstalling it with Steam started as administrator, didn't work either.

It also does not try to elevate when updating the software. The updater just fails and closes. I have to run DispalyFusion as administrator in the first place to update.

Sounds like it could be a permissions error. If you install DisplayFusion to a different folder, or download the zipped version and extract it to the desktop, can you get it to run normally that way? This is just a test to see if there's a permissions problem with the installed folder.

It works correctly if i download the zipped version.

Using the Steam installation there is no option to change the installation folder.
I also checked the permissions of the installation folder and it has Read&Execute enabled.

Do DisplayFusion.exe and DisplayFusionCommand.exe both have Read and Execute enabled as well?

Yes they do.

Ok, I'm a bit stumped on why it isn't working then. If you exit DisplayFusion, rename the C:\Program Files (x86)\DisplayFusion\ folder to DisplayFusion2, then double-click DisplayFusion.exe, does it work correctly?

No, renaming it does not change anything.

I tried running it in Sanboxie. In there it works flawlessly.

Ok, what about if you unzip the zipped version to C:\Program Files (x86)\DisplayFusion3 (copy Branding.xml from the regular directory into the DisplayFusion3 directory as well), and then launch DisplayFusion.exe from there?

Yes, that works. Somehow it also fixed the existing installation.

Today, it doesn't work again. Neither the existing version, nor the zip-folder version. And i have no clue what has changed.

Wow, that's strange! Do you have up to date antivirus software on your system? Just wondering if there might be some malware that's messing with the EXEs?

Yes, i'm using Windows Defender. Also, the Windows 10 installation is just a week old.

I replaced my graphics card due to some glitches with it today, and displayfusion is working again. Could it be that the card was the culprit?

Wow, not sure on that! Keep me posted on how it goes though :)

Nope, wasn't the card. It's not working again today.

I can't even imagine what the problem could be there. It's odd that it's so random. Have you tried testing the memory with something like memtest86+?

I believe it to be some kind of licensing issue.
I looks like there is a 1 day licensing period before it has to be reactivated through steam.
If steam is not active, it will work until the current period runs out. If steam is active it will just continue working. But if steam is not active it doesn't suffice to start steam and try again, but I have to restart the computer (making sure that displayfusion is not in autostart), start steam, and then start displayfusion. Not quite so easy to track this down ;)

That's really strange! You should be able to run DisplayFusion even without Steam running. I will do some testing here to see what I can find out. Which version of Windows are you running?

I am using Windows 10.
I recently upgraded from Windows 8.1 (clean install), and that was when this started.

Can you email us your Steam key (support@displayfusion.com)? I'll link it to your account and send you a non-Steam key to try out.

So, I took the liberty of enabling logging and trying to make some sense of this error.
1.: I should have been more specific in describing the problem. What happens is that if i open a displayfusion window, it shows me the splash screen and then the error message. The splash screen timeouts and disappears.
2.: The "DisplayFusionSettings.exe" does not have any problems itself. If i copy the arguments from the log file, it opens correctly.
3.: I'll just attach the log file for your own perusal.

I don't know where in Steam I could get the key. There is a Licence Key value in the log file though. If that is not what you need, you'll have to explain how to find the key.

Oh, interesting! So are you trying to open the Settings from the desktop context menu? Or from the DisplayFusion system tray icon?

From the tray icon. That's where I get the error i originally described.
When I try to open it from the context menu it just doesn't do anything. Also the context menu is missing the displayfusion icon and just displays the default application icon.

The "not working" of the context menu settings was due to having renamed the displayfusion folder. It currently works from both tray and context menu to open the settings, so I don't know if it is a tray only problem. The icon is still missing though.

The Icons are back now, after restarting with the folder renamed to the original name. Both are working right now, so I still can't tell if there is a difference.

It's been not working for 4 days now. No idea what makes it work or not work.

I'm running out of ideas too :(

Can you attach a copy of your troubleshooting info? Here are the steps:
  • Open the Settings > Troubleshooting tab
  • Click the "Copy to Clipboard" button
  • Paste the text into a text file (please don't paste the text directly into your reply, the formatting gets garbled and makes it difficult to parse)
  • Reply with the file attached

Hasn't been working once to open it from tray or contextmenu since I replied last.

Is DisplayFusion set to start with Windows, or do you manually launch it when you login?

Ok, I've tested this out again here, with Steam and DF both being installed and run as a local user on startup, and everything works correctly for me. I'm totally stumped on what the issue could be here.

Perhaps some Windows system files are corrupt? You can try the following two commands to repair Windows and the .NET Framework to see if that makes any difference at all:

sfc /scannow
dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth

I have to expand the problem description a little.
Additional to the previous problems, I have discovered that the invocation of any commands, such as opening taskmgr or using right click commands on running applications (except close), through the displayfusion taskbar produces the same error.
