Ever since I upgraded to 3.4.1, DisplayFusion has every once and a while crashed (as in the bar turns gray and Window asks me to wait or exit the application).

I have never had this problem before.

Any advice what I can do? Should I downgrade to 3.4.0 and then wait for 3.4.2?

Update 1: I am not using a Microsoft keyboard or have anything related to IntelliType installed (as far as I know).

You can certainly try downgrading to 3.4: http://www.binaryfortress.com/Files/DisplayFusionSetup-3.4.0.exe

Please let me know if that fixes it up. I'll also post an update as soon as the next beta is available. We're making some more changes that will hopefully improve the performance and stability of the taskbar feature.

Thanks!

I'm having the exact same problem. I will downgrade for now. This is the first time I've had this problem and I've been running this for awhile now.

The provided link is not working. I'll just try the download from the main site.

I apologize for the link! I've fixed it up and it should now point to the 3.4 download.

Thanks!

I'm having this problem too. I am looking forward to a solution so I don't have to downgrade.

DisplayFusion 3.5 Beta 1 is now available, and has a bunch more performance and stability improvements. Could you give it a try and let me know how it goes?

Thanks for following up Bruce! Unfortunately those Windows error reports don't provide enough info :(

We'll keep working on it and I'll post an update as soon as a new build is ready to test.

Thanks!

I realize they are pretty much generic... what I found interesting though was the fact that it showed I was using DisplayFusion.exe - Application Version:3.4.9.101. I'm not sure if that's normal even though I've updated to the beta 3.5 version.

Yep, that's normal, our internal build numbers are a little bit different from what we call them publicly :)

As for the crashing issue itself, we're still making some more changes, and we're adding some new metrics and extra information to the debug logging for the next beta version. I'll be sure to let you know as soon as it's available to try out.

Thanks!

DisplayFusion 3.5 Beta 2 is now available for download here: http://www.displayfusion.com/Download/Beta/

It will hopefully resolve any performance or stability issues, but if not, please do the following to help us troubleshoot it further:
  • On the Troubleshooting tab, change the Logging drop-down to "Logging: All Lines"
  • In the Advanced Settings, enable the "General: Advanced Debug Logging" option (note that if you already had the options in steps #1 and #2 enabled, please disable them to see if the performance issues still exist. If they do, turn them back on and proceed to step #3)
  • During, or after the issue occurs, send me the info from the Troubleshooting tab, as well as the DisplayFusion.log file (can be found by clicking the Open Log button on the Troubleshooting tab)
  • You can turn off the options from steps #1 and #2 after sending the info in step #3.

Thanks!

Still crashing.... Here is the info you asked for. Also, it crashed while I was trying to get to the DisplayFusion.log file. Hope this helps.

Just as an aside... I haven't installed anything (that's runs in the background anyway) in quite some time. Everything that is running now has been running while it was working previously. I've tried shutting down random things with no effect. I even stopped using Chrome for a few days and it still happened..

Thanks Bruce! Don't be alarmed that I deleted the attachments, I've downloaded them locally to my machine :)

I'll check these logs out and keep you posted!

Just to double check, do you have any Microsoft Keyboard or Mouse software (IntelliType or IntelliPoint) installed?

No, I don't have either installed although I do have a Microsoft Habu but I believe it uses drivers and software from Razer. I also have a Microsoft Wireless Gaming Receiver (Xbox 360). It seems to having nothing running outside of the drivers that I can see.

I've encountered the same performance and crashing problems with 3.4.1 and the 3.5 beta. I've downgraded to 3.4.0 and have encountered no problems yet...knock on wood.

And, 3.4.0 isn't quite right in the performance area either. It's running between 8% and 20% CPU utilization.

This, combined with the two year old request for wallpaper spanning (see http://www.displayfusion.com/Discussions/View/?ID=bb30d508-00d0-424b-a815-d9736af5c563) has me seriously considering alternatives to DisplayFusion.

I apologize that these performance issues are still ongoing, but they are a top priority for us, and will continue to be top priority until they are resolved.

As for the wallpaper request, we've got a number of wallpaper features and changes planned for the release after 3.5, and this one will definitely be in it.

Thanks!

I haven't had any "serious" performance issues. DisplayFusion 3.4.0 seems to use a consistent 1% CPU which isn't great but not unreasonable and it's not really going to kill me. I would like to see it occasionally hit 0% but given the choice between crashing every 20 minutes or so and this, I'll take the 1%...

Every time I open task manager to check, DF 3.4.0 is using at least 12%, but usually at 25%.

I'm also using Bins (http://www.1upindustries.com/bins/), and as an experiment I stopped the Bins process then stopped the DF process. I restarted DF and it's now only consuming 1% max.

So, it seems to me to be a compatibility issue with Bins.

Ok, same version I'm testing with here. DisplayFusion's CPU usage seems to go up a couple percent when Bins is running, but it seems that a lot of other programs increase their CPU usage when Bins is running as well.

I noticed that with a bunch of programs open but idle when Bins is not running, the total CPU usage on my system was around 5-10%, with DisplayFusion at 0-1%. After launching Bins, the total CPU usage on my system went up to 25-30% and stayed there consistently, with DisplayFusion around 3-4%.

Not quite sure what to make of those results yet, but I'll definitely investigate it further.

Thanks!

I just managed to get 3.4.0 into the 25% utilization state, so whatever the problem is, it also is present in 3.4.0.

With Bins running. Funny thing is that it's been running for several days without incident. The only thing different was that I was attempting to open a Word document from an email, but I can't say for certain if the CPU usage was high at that point or not.

Ok, we've got another idea on what might be causing it, so we're going to make some changes for Beta 5. I'll post an update as soon as it's available to try out.

Thanks!

Ok, I've actually been able to reproduce the issue with Bins finally. We're going to investigate it further and I'll be sure to post an update as soon as we find something out.

For the other folks that don't have Bins running, could you give 3.5 Beta 5 a try, and let me know how it works out? If the CPU is still high, please let me know whether it is consistently high, or if it creeps up over time.

Thanks!

Keith,

I notice it creeps up slowly, and gets up to 25% (I'm running a Quad Core, so this would be 100% on a single core) over about a 24 hour period.

Yep, this is exactly the behaviour I see when Bins is running as well. We'll do some more investigating and I'll keep you posted as soon as we find something out.

Thanks!

I'm not sure when this thread became a discussion about Bins, but I'd like to know if anyone has done any work on the issue of the frequent crashes for those of us having issues that aren't using Bins..

@Bruce: The initial thought was that the issues might be related, but we're working on both at the same time anyways. Were you able to give DisplayFusion 3.5 Beta 5 a try?

After a few days of using 3.5 it still crashes. Not quite as much as it used to but still pretty frequently. Mostly after lengthy inactivity. As an example, I woke up today and went to my browser (which is on the extended desktop) and clicked the icon on the taskbar. It didn't open and it then greyed out (the taskbar) then brought up a window telling me it had ceased to respond. Waiting for it to respond does nothing. Closing and restarting is the only option at that point.

I've gone back to 3.4.0, as it doesn't seem to have this problem.

@Bruce: Ok, thanks for testing it out! Could you download Process Explorer (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896653), use File > Save As to save the list of running processes, and attach it here so I can check it out? Just curious to see if there's anything running on your system that DisplayFusion might have some compatibility issues with.

Note, the attachments here are protected by default (only you and Binary Fortress staff can view/download them).

Thanks!

@Bruce: If you're still running into issues with DisplayFusion crashing, could you give 3.5 Beta 10 a try? We've made some changes to the taskbar that should hopefully have everything fixed up.

For the folks who were having issues with Bins, the Bins developer has posted an updated version at the link below that fixes up the issue:
