Hello there everyone,
I am a 5th grade teacher at a school that is fortunate enough to have a Smart Board available to my grade level.
I am trying to use Displayfusion on my smartboard and it is functioning wonderfully except for one small problem:

- When I touch/click the start button on the second taskbar (on my smartboard/second monitor) it opens the start menu on my laptop screen (primary monitor.) I am looking for a solution to this problem, because on my home computer I have no issues (pressing the second taskbar's start button opens the menu on the displayfusion taskbar correctly.)

I have looked through advanced options and searched on google to no avail for about an hour now and I can't figure it out.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you and God bless.

- Mr. S

Glad to hear you like DisplayFusion so far! Could you attach a copy of the info from the DisplayFusion Settings > Troubleshooting tab, and also do the following to help troubleshoot further?
  • Enable debug logging on the Troubleshooting tab (set it to Logging: Important Only) and click Apply
  • Restart DisplayFusion
  • Click the Start button on the smartboard a few times (please note the time so I'll know where to look in the log file)
  • Attach the %appdata%\DisplayFusion\DisplayFusion.log file to this topic (can be found by clicking the 'Open Log' button on the Troubleshooting tab)
  • Disable debug logging after sending me the log
Thanks!

Here is the Log from the debugging. I hit the start menu 10 times from my smartboard starting at 7:55 AM
Thank you for the help, I really am hoping to get this working so that my school can purchase Displayfusion for all of our computers.

Thanks! It looks like DisplayFusion is failing to find the Start menu for some reason. Could you attach a copy of the info from the DisplayFusion Settings > Troubleshooting tab, while the smart board is connected and enabled?

Keith, I'm sorry if I was not clear in my second post -
The debug file that I attached was completed while the smartboard *was* on and attached. The taskbar / startmenu that I was pressing was the taskbar on the 2nd monitor (smart board.)

Is there something else I should do or would you like me to record the same thing a second time? Hope this makes sense & I hope that I am understanding you correctly!

Sorry, I should have clarified a bit more as well :)

I'm looking for the info from the Troubleshooting tab itself. You can use the Copy to Clipboard button, then paste it into Notepad, save it, and attach it here.

Thanks!

Thanks Anthony! Are you using any Start menu replacement software on your machine?

No... Displayfusion is the only software I am using in regards to start menu / system tray / taskbar

Ok, weird! Do you have a normal second monitor that you could try hooking up, instead of the smartboard to see if the Start menu works on there? I'm just wondering if the smartboard or it's software might be interfering somehow.

I just tried a normal monitor as the secondary extended display. It functions the same as the Smartboard - when the start button is clicked on that monitor the start menu that opens & displays is on the primary (laptop) screen instead.

I have considered trying to uninstall and reinstall Displayfusion, but that would be a difficult process, as my laptop is currently at the school and to take it home would not be an easy task. Furthermore, my Displayfusion account / installation is via Steam and I don't want to log on to my Steam account on that computer any longer (privacy concerns at work.)

Please let me know what else I could try or do - thank you for all your cooperation thus far!

Ok, thanks for trying that out! That rules out the smartboard as being an issue at least :)

Are you able to install other software? I'm wondering if you'd be able to follow the attached instructions to send me some more info, but it requires another third-party application.

I don't know whether this is related or not - but I am also having trouble getting the Tablet PC Input Panel to show up on my displayfusion taskbar on my 2nd monitor. It shows up on my 1st monitor but I can't get the function to work on any other screen.

Ok, I downloaded / installed Window Detective and saved both files as requested. They are attached.

Thanks! It definitely looks like the Start menu isn't getting hooked for some reason. Would you be able to try the previous version of DisplayFusion from the link below? No need to uninstall the current version, this one will just install over top.

I tried to install the older version over 5.1, but the taskbar still functions the same (the start button is still broken)

Ok, thanks for trying that. Just wanted to see if it was something that broke in the latest release, but I guess not :)

Is there any security software on your machine that might be preventing DisplayFusion from hooking explorer.exe?

Now that you mention it, the only thing that I can think of that could be conflicting would be
Spybot S&D's Resident Protection application - but I'm not certain how it works.

I tried disabling the Resident Protection (Teatimer) part of Spybot S&D but it has not changed anything. I am going to try uninstalling Spybot and reinstalling Displayfusion, I'll let you know what I find.

So far no luck with disabling and uninstalling anything - Just incase it helps us resolve this faster I want to tell you the other applications I have that may possibly conflict -

Avast! Free Antivirus
Zone Alarm Free Firewall
Spybot Search & Destroy (With Teatimer installed)
Spywareblaster
My Lockbox - for hiding 1 folder w/ documents / school related info from the students

Those are the only security type services I run.

Teatimer on Spybot S&D, My Lockbox, and Zone Alarm are the only programs that differ from what my school computer & my home computer have installed. (In other words, literally all of the other applications running on this computer are running on my home computer and my home computer functions normally with its second taskbar.)

I followed these steps precisely, and I am certain teatimer is no longer running on my system:

http://www.ehow.com/how_4925001_delete-spybot-search-destroy-teatimer.html

but I'm still getting the same problem. Should I try uninstalling Displayfusion (instead of simply installing over the old version?)

Re-installing DisplayFusion shouldn't make a difference, but you can try it if you like :)

I'm going to install the security programs that you listed on a test machine here to see if they will make a difference at all. I'll keep you posted on what I find out!

Thank you so much! In the meantime is there any other type of a program I can use to collect data on my computer that could help you?

I should also mention the versions of the programs I used

Spybot was version 1.6.2 that can be found here at the bottom of the page (where it says "other downloads")

http://www.safer-networking.org/dl/

And My Lockbox can be found here:

fspro.net/my-lockbox/

but I only have the free version - it only allows hiding one folder, so I hid a folder that was in the C:\ drive (not a vital/critical system folder, just a regular one)

Zone Alarm Firewall Free was downloaded here:

Figured it out! It appears the problem was Zone Alarm Free Firewall - I uninstalled that and now everything works again!

Hopefully - at the very least - all this troubleshooting we went through will be helpful for future versions of Displayfusion.
Thank you so much for all your support - I'm really glad I chose Displayfusion over your competitors! I'll be continuing to recommend our school system purchases copies for all of our teacher computers.

Ok, awesome, glad to hear you were able to get it sorted out! I had installed ZoneAlarm Free here, and still couldn't reproduce the issue. Do you know off the top of your head if you had any of the settings in ZoneAlarm customized?

I remember selecting something like "advanced mode" where it would block all connections and ask me to approve everything. Then some dialog boxes came up at the bottom of the screen and kept popping up all the time until I hit cancel / ignore program.

I have DisplayFusion v7.3.2 and recently (while using the previous version), my Start menu stopped popping up. I hover over it and it glows, but when I click, nothing happens. I have four monitors. This was working fine a few days ago, but now no Start menu on any monitor will function. If I right click on any of them, I get Properties and Open Windows Explorer. But the normal left-click function is being ignored.

Could you attach a copy of your troubleshooting info?
  • Open the Settings > Troubleshooting tab
  • Click the "Copy to Clipboard" button
  • Paste the text into a text file (please don't paste the text directly into your reply, the formatting gets garbled and makes it difficult to parse)
  • Reply with the file attached

Thanks!
