A recent AVG and Avast antivirus update is preventing DisplayFusion 9.9 from launching on some systems.
If you're running into this issue, please update to the latest DisplayFusion 10.0 Beta.

Trouble pinning Notepad to Taskbar in Windows 11

I've been trying and failing to pin Notepad to a taskbar. When I open Notepad and right click the taskbar icon, the resulting shortcut opens the app with a modal that says "Cannot find the C:\SESSION:<random characters>.txt file. Do you want to create a new file?" with Yes/No options. If I click Yes, it proceeds as usual with a blank document.

No matter how I try to finagle the shortcut - even pasting the notepad.exe path straight into the text box - I can't get around it. The only way to avoid it is to run as administrator, which opens a blank document with no problem. However I still have to click a button in the popup that says "Do you want to allow this app to make changes..."
Via the Windows taskbar, I use the Notepad shortcut fairly frequently for one-click quick notes. I'd like to do the same thing with the DF taskbar, but the extra click is an annoying barrier.

What am I missing?

Edited to add: I'm using DF Pro 9.9 on Windows 11 Pro build 22000.1219

Hi Kris,

Thanks for sending that over. Do you have DisplayFusion installed in the "Program Files" folder, or the "Program Files (x86)" folder? If not, it won't be able to auto-elevate when launching apps, I wonder if that's causing some issues here.

Thanks!

It's installed in the (x86) folder. Do I need to reinstall and make sure it goes in the "Program Files" folder?

Probably has nothing to do with Taskbar but with DF and/or Windows 11. Same error message here. Tried to start Notepad via Custom Script like this one ( https://www.displayfusion.com/ScriptedFunctions/View/?ID=30cda61c-e948-450d-97e1-489e29c58a85 ) and also got the same error message.

DisplayFusion is installed in "C:\Program Files (x86)\DisplayFusion", I am using the Steam version if that matters. Running Beta 22

@KrisAndrews Nope that should be fine, either Program Files folder works. Could you send me over a screenshot of the "Edit Shortcut" window in DisplayFusion with Notepad pinned?

@lupus Does it fail when launching from a pinned icon as well?

Here's the screenshot.
If it matters, for some reason I have two versions of Notepad, at "C:\Windows\System32\notepad.exe" and one at "C:\Windows\notepad.exe". I've tried both, with the same result.

Thanks for sending that over, I tested with those setting on my end and it seemed to work fine. Can you update to our latest beta and let me know if the issue persists? Here's the link: https://www.displayfusion.com/Download/Beta/

You may need to re-pin the app to the taskbar after updating.

If you head here and click "Get in Store app", does it say it's installed? https://apps.microsoft.com/store/detail/windows-notepad/9MSMLRH6LZF3?hl=en-us&gl=us

Yes I can only choose 'open' from the Windows Store. Notepad is installed. I use it a lot.

Okay strange, are you manually selecting the notepad.exe path, or is that the default path when you pin notepad?

Now that Notepad is listed in the Windows Store, the path should be something like this: C:\Program Files\WindowsApps\Microsoft.WindowsNotepad_11.2302.16.0_x64__8wekyb3d8bbwe\Notepad\Notepad.exe

I am not selecting or pinning notepad.exe at all. I simply do this:

right-click taskbar -> multi-monitor taskbar -> shortcuts -> edit shortcuts -> add file -> select my .txt file

I installed DF Pro 10.0 Beta 23. I'm no longer getting the SESSION popup. Many thanks!

For reference I'm attaching a screenshot of the edit modal for the shortcut after I re-pinned Notepad (by opening the app, right-clicking the taskbar icon and choosing "Pin this program"). Also, the installer failed unless I ran it as admin. Sounds like it might be relevant.

Yes the new beta fixed it for me too! Thanks.

Well the error is back. I guess it only worked shortly after installation of the beta or something? Now I am again getting the SESSION error...

Thanks for sending that over, I was able to reproduce this on my end so I've added it to our list to look into.

This issue should be fixed up in the latest beta, available here: https://www.displayfusion.com/Download/Beta. Please let me know if you still run into any trouble after updating.

Thanks!

No it is not fixed. Same error still.

As a workaround, what does work, is if I add notepad.exe as an application and as commandline argument I add the path to the txt file. However, this only works if I tag "launch as administrator". See added screenshot.
