I love the alternate start menu included in 4.3. Im using it with my recent load of Windows 8 and I'd love to have this on my default task bar as well and completely replace the metro start menu, but there didnt seem to be a setting available for this. Is this by design or a technical limitation?

Thanks!

You have to install Classic Shell (Classic Start Menu is one of 3 programs within), it blends seamlessly into DF. Additionally, DF finds all the settings used in your windows version of Classic Start Menu, so you don't have to set up up CSM twice.

Works great, except it won't change the DF start button, but they're working on that.

Here is the site for Classic Shell. http://classicshell.sourceforge.net/

Thanks for posting that solution Mark! We'll post an update when we're able to add our own Start button to the Windows taskbar.

Just wanted to follow-up with you and let you know that the latest beta version of DisplayFusion (http://www.displayfusion.com/Download/Beta/) supports the Classic Shell (http://classicshell.sourceforge.net/) software as a Start menu on the DisplayFusion taskbar. If you install Classic Shell, it will place the Start menu on the primary monitor, and then DisplayFusion will also use it when opening the Start menu on the secondary monitors.

Please let me know if you have any other questions at all.

Thanks!

New user to DF, CSM and Windows 8.

I have the DF 5B3 installed with CS 3.6.5.

My primary display has the start button behaves as expected based on my settings - the menus show up above the button.

On on my second monitor (which I guess is called the DF task bar) when I click on the start button the menus still show above the primary task bar start button only and I have to mouse over there to make selections.

Is this a current limitation or have I failed to configure both DF as CS properly to get the desired outcome - menus pop up above whatever start button is pressed.

Thanks for your work on this great application.

@Ross: The Start menu should definitely open above whichever Start button you pressed, so it sounds like something is broken in your installation. Could you please attach a copy of the info from the DisplayFusion Settings > Troubleshooting tab?

Thanks!

From the Troubleshooting info, it looks like DisplayFusion isn't getting the handle for the Start menu. Would you be able to do the following to help troubleshoot further?
  • Enable debug logging on the Troubleshooting tab (set it to Logging: Important Only) and click Apply
  • Restart DisplayFusion, then click the Start button on the DF taskbar a few times (please note the time so I'll know where to look in the log file)
  • Send me the %appdata%\DisplayFusion\DisplayFusion.log file (can be found by clicking the 'Open Log' button on the Troubleshooting tab)
  • Disable debug logging after sending me the log
Thanks!

Thanks for the continued support.

I've attached the log you requested.

After restarting DF, I made several selections of the Start button on both monitors at 5:16.

@Ross: I noticed in your original request that you were using 5.0 Beta 3, but the Troubleshooting info said Beta 6. I'm assuming the debug log that you sent was from Beta 6 as well?

I guess I was wrong. I have done no upgrades so I must have installed Beta 6. Sorry for the misinformation.

No worries, just wanted to double-check! Which Classic Shell skin are you using?

Currently it is the Metro Skin.

Let me know if I should try a different one.

The problem went away by selecting any other skin.

It returns when the METRO skin is selected.

I am happy to use another skin.

I will continue to follow this thread in case you find it is a DF issue and not a CS issue and post the fix here.

Otherwise, consider me another satisfied customer.

I enjoy the product and appreciate the support you have provided.

Ok, awesome! I'll do some testing with the Metro skin and we'll post an update if/when we're able to fix it up.

Thanks for all of your help with testing this issue!

We've just released DisplayFusion 5.0 Beta 8 (http://www.displayfusion.com/Download/Beta/), and this issue should be all fixed up.

Thanks!

It works great with DF 5.0 Beta 8! (pardon the rhyme)

Thanks for the terrific support.
