I just tried, then purchased DF a few days ago and really like it, but..
Unless I run it as admin, every time it changes the wallpaper I get the UAC prompt
"do you want to allow the following program to make changes...".
It's a downloaded copy with valid license, installed into c:\Program Files (x86)\...
If run as admin, no problem. Is this as expected?
Thanks

Do you have the "Use the current Desktop Wallpaper image for the Windows Logon Background" option enabled on the Windows Logon tab in the DisplayFusion settings?

If so, it is as expected. This option will throw a UAC prompt because the Windows Logon Background stuff is stored in a protected area of the OS.

Thanks!

I'm sorry for bumping this old question, but it treats the exact issue I'm facing. It seemed like a better idea to use this that make a new thread.

Anyways, I have the same issue, but I WANT to use the same image for my logon background. I just don't want to have to deal with the UAC every 10 minutes.

In windows XP there was a registry tweak that allowed the logon screen exe file to be stored anywhere and named pretty much anything. I was wondering if this tweak still works on windows 7. Otherwise the "use my desktop background for logon" is virtually useless for anyone using the desktop switcher.

If there's no other way around it and the registry entry still works, then maybe the next version of Displayfusion could let it's own logonui.exe inside the program folder and modify the registry to reflect that. Doing that should get rid of the annoying UAC pop-up.

Most Win 7 folks I know run as Administrator w/ UAC off.

UAC is a PIA for most power users.

The registry change in Windows 7 is also in a protected area, so the UAC prompt is necessary to make the registry change as well :(

However, we're investigating the possibility of having a system service set the Logon Background, and if we can make it work, it will definitely be included in a future version :)

Thanks!

Most people I know that run as Administator with UAC turned off also run into other problems because of crap they did.

Also, as far as I know even when UAC is turned off, you still get a warning when changing files within the protected area.

yeah but once the registry change to move the C:\Windows\System32\oobe\info\backgrounds folder out of the protected area, then the UAC shouldn't pop-up anymore.

A single UAC pop-up on initial set-up of the option is much much better than one every time the background changes.

Ah, good thinking, but I've just looked into it further, and unfortunately the image file itself needs to be in a specific location, as the registry key only enables the custom background, but doesn't allow you to specify the location via the registry.

Hi,
i know this Thread is old, but i might have an idea to solve this problem.
Would it might be possible to integrate the task scheduler in the process of changing the logon screen?
The scheduler skips the UAC...

That's one option we've considered. We may also use a Windows service to do it. Either way, we'll post an update when we're able to implement it :)

Thanks!

Bump! I worked on task scheduler and trigger the helper.exe with highest privileges upon unlock/lock, and it wouldn't work unfortunately. In the meantime, maybe the ability to run helper.exe with scheduler would be a simple fix if could manually trigger the helper.

We're planning to use the DisplayFusionService for changing the logon background, and that will hopefully be included in the final version of 6.0 :)

We've just released a new DisplayFusion beta version and changing the Windows Logon Background will no longer throw a UAC prompt. Please let us know if you run into any trouble after updating.

Thanks!

The fix works perfectly in version 6.0! Thanks!

If I could make another suggestion, if would be to allow the selection of multiple files or a whole folder. It's nice to have the logon screen change every time the wallpaper changes, but it would be even nicer to have it change to something different than the current wallpaper.

The way I have it set up now is I have a folder with about 50 wallpapers that are used randomly for each of my monitors after a certain about of time. It would nice if a logon screen could also be randomly selected on a certain time interval too.

@Dex: I've added that to our feature request list, and if we're able to implement it in a future version, we'll be sure to let you know :)

Thanks!
